FReeper names explained
My curiousity | Now | Yours truly

Posted on 01/18/2002 5:03:35 PM PST by Come get it

Some FReepers have nicks that are obvious in their origin, others don't. I've seen several that probably have interesting stories behind them.

I thought it would be cool to see where FReepers get their handles from. If you don't like this topic, DON'T POST HERE! No one forces you to read this. I'm sure other people may be interested. If I'm the only one, let me know so I can crawl away in shame.

Wow, I haven't been on here in probably 2 years, but I see my thread has been dredged up a few times...

Here's a shameless bump to resurrect it from the dead one more time.

BUMP I first wanted "Freedom Fighter 1776" to honor those brave men who founded our country but it was taken.

So I am Freedom_Fighter_2001, to honor those who are fighting for us now. September 11, 2001 Never Forget!

I am a hairy individual, and I once joked to my then-friend-now-wife that I looked like a gorilla with a shaved back. She later gave me a framed copy of a Far Side cartoon with a gorilla checking the mirror to see if he was becoming a silverback. The callsign stuck.

Her callsign (Rambette) is a takeoff on Rambo was given to her in Air Force basic training by a fellow traineee, and it really got used a lot later in her career when she was stationed with the 10th Mountain Division and was as good at the field stuff as the Army folks. (She's gorgeous, so don't get a mental picture in your head of somebody who looks like Sly Stallone with eye shadow or something.)

Russian word for "arrow," and I know just about enough Russian to get my face slapped in Moscow

Also the name of a nasty little Soviet-era shoulder-fired SAM.

It's pretty complicated in my case.

"MarkL"

My first name is "Mark," and my last name begins with the letter "L."

Actually, it has caused some confusion in the past. There have been a few cases where people thought that I might be "The Great One," Mark Levin, though I am not. For the record, I've contacted both JimRob and sent an email to Mark Levin, after I was contacted by other freepers asking if I was him, to see if either wanted me to give up my "handle."

I never received a reply from either. So that's why I'm still MarkL

Mark

I stole the name of a columnist for the old New York Herald (that crazy Scot J.G. Bennett's paper) . . . the byline was "An American Mother" and it was a mildly satiric view of the politically correct of the day.

The columnist was actually the Danish Consul, I can't recall his name, I have it written down somewhere. The column was featured years ago in American Heritage magazine (back when it was good).

I had just watched an episode of Stargate just before I signed on. My tag line comes from a line by Scrooge in A Christmas Carol.

Mine was my Half-Life computer game screen name.

I had a friend who was bi-polar who went off his meds. Last time I saw him he was being hauled off to jail naked for throwing bricks at strangers out his 2nd story apt window (by a female cop no less).

One of the 1st player made skins to come out for half-life characters was the naked scientist. I thought it was really funny to be him and only use my tire iron, and I decided he was having a Manic Episode.

I really kicked ass like that too. People would fire a RPG at me and I would just hop over the missile and whap-whap-whap with the tire iron while they were fumbling around trying to reload.

I've been Manic Episode ever since.

Mine is Kharis13...Kharis is the name of the mummy in the old Universal films of the early-mid 40s. I just thought adding a 13 would be cool.

Simple. Now bring me 9 tana leaves.

Brian
