Deal may depend on Norv Turner being hired as assistant coach

FROM NEWS SERVICES

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman is completing a deal with the Miami Dolphins, after sitting out the 2001 season, according to ABC News Radio.

The Dolphins declined comment Sunday, and coach Dave Wannstedt told a team spokesman that he would answer questions about Aikman on Monday.

ABC News Radio reported Aikman - who had 11 concussions in 12 seasons - is 99 percent sure he wants to play again, particularly with the Dolphins if they hire Norv Turner as their new offensive coordinator.

Turner, a longtime friend of Wannstedt's, was the Chargers' offensive coordinator this season. He would leave San Diego if he is not elevated to coach to replace the fired Mike Riley, or the Chargers don't hire a coach with whom he wants to work.

Chan Gailey, who was the team's offensive coordinator the past two seasons, is taking over as the coach at Georgia Tech.

The Dolphins' current quarterback, Jay Fiedler, can opt out of his contract, although Miami has the right of first refusal should he receive an offer.

''I would love to stay here,'' Fiedler said. ''I'll let things play out. We're at a point right now where it's up in the air. My first choice would be to be back here with the Dolphins.''

Heresy! Troy will always be a Cowboy.

He couldn't change that by putting a silly fish on the side of his helmet.

This is a bad move. Troy needs to take up golf and ride the celebrity train along with Montana and Elway.

Cut back to Irvin's draft to the Cowboys. Asked what he thought about who should be quarterback, he replied "It doesn't matter, whoever it is, they will ride my back to the hall of fame."

11 concussions in 12 seasons

Not a smart move in my opinion.

Wow! The guy needs his head re-examined. I doubt he'll last the whole season, and he might really be risking his future health. I admire his guts, but I think he is out of his mind.

I'd hate to see the guy give his Hall of Fame speech sounding like Mohammed Ali.

He should enjoy his retirement and his health. The NFL is a young man's game. Not that Troy is old, but for this game...

On an unrelated note....Did anyone else's fonts in FR just grow a few points? I don't see it on any page or application except FR. Strange.

Bad move.

The reason Miami lost yesterday is becuase they have no front line. If Troy goes there, he'll be killed!

I could never get use to seeing Marcus Allen in a red helmet after all the years as a Raider.

Humph!!! Troy never was real bright in my opinion. I have to agree with the consensus here. Troy should be carted off in a straight jacket for even considering it. Too much testosterone, not enought sense.

That's crazy.

That said, if I was Aikman, would I do it. In a minute. Going out on that field is something that can't be explained, I really missed it the first year I was away from that, and that was just high school ball. Magnify it by 10000 in Aikman's case.

Many of these players would give their lives to play ball. It's about more than the money.

Is he an idiot? Retire gracefully man, you have a new baby...don't you want to enjoy seeing her grow up without suffering from additional brain damage? I can imagine him 20 years from now, mumbling unintelligibly from all the blows to his noggin. Poor man, he's my age, 35 which isn't old, but for football after 11 concussions...stop the madness!

There is only two things dumber than Aikman returning, the coach and GM that sign him.

Aikman is vastly overrated. The humungous Dallas offensive line was the reason why he's one the most accurate passers in football.

Hell, I'd be accurate too if had an extra 5 seconds in the pocket....

The man has certainly had his head knocked around, but if he were to play with the Phins he's going to be on turf only a couple of times a season and that alone will make things a lot easier on his noggin.

Oh, sure, Troy, now you say it. Where were you yesterday, hm?

Actually, Fiedler had OK time, he had nobody to throw it to. The Ravens choked off the run so that they could fully cover the WRs and Fiedler was running around looking for a target.
