Recently, the House of Representatives took a historic step towards giving

President Bush the tools he needs to help jumpstart our economy and help the

thousands of Americans who have lost their jobs. The House passed

Presidential Trade Promotion Authority by a single vote. While TPA is clearly

in the best interest of American workers and businesses, for several Members

of Congress this was an extremely tough vote for them to cast. These leaders

showed incredible courage in voting for increased free trade and to support

President Bush.

Hmmm..I don't know. My only fear is that this may give the Executive Branch more power than it should have. Remember, this sort of thing WILL eventually be used by a Democrat when one gets into the Oval Office again.

Also, how much power does this give the President in regards to globalization. Is he allowed to go over everyones head when it comes time to weaken our national sovreignty?

This "Trade promotion authority" or what used to be known as Fastrack is nothing more than an abridgement to our democracy. It gives the president an all or nothing deal on trade treaties - more than likely it will be all. It will undermine labor, environmental, and social controls over corporations, bastions of unaccountable private power as witnessed by the successful coup staged by the Republican party in the last election which gets the lion's share of corporate contributions. All we need now is an undemocratically installed president to wipe away more democratic controls. Trade liberalism has failed as an ideology as much as communism has.

Mega dittos. Even if Bush is a saint [not], why put more power in the hands of the executive. That power belongs to Congress.

Dream on. Congress, which amended the Constitution to enforce the traditional 2 term limit on the President, will never give up its constitutional balance of power on treaties. You can also throw in the line-item-veto with this.

Jack Oliver Deputy Chairman, RNC needs to read the Constitution to see what the difference is in the Executive Branch and the Legislative Branch authorities. He may admire President Bush but this only furthers dictatorship in our republic. We need governors to resist this but I haven't heard a word from Gov. Guinn.

As I understand it, Sen. Tom Daschle is not going to allow this to be voted on this year. This may be the only time I ever agree with the diminutive Dakotan.

If GW really wants this authority, he could issue another executive order tomorrow granting this power unto himself as another tool in the "war on terrorism."

I say if you want to be a dictator, go all the way. And then dare the people to rebel. It's happened that way in banana republics from time immemorial.
