Jefferson would be proud that our system of Government was still operating and the people mostly in charge. He would take a look at the Internet and the free exchange of ideas and know that Americans are essentially free.
Sure we have problems and our Government has over reached in many areas, but the success of America would prove that the system works.
Since he was willing to exceed what he recognized as his constitutional authority in order to make the Louisiana Purchase; he would understand how the original intent could be adapted.
Before anybody takes me wrong, let me say that I am a libertarian and know our country could be better with a lot less Government. I am also an optimist and a pragmatist. Jefferson would see both the good and the bad. Things are better than they might have been but not as good as they could be.
"When in the Course of human Events..."
The seperation of class..and priviledge was what lead to the Civil war..both sides standing on "Rights of priviledge"
The same dynamic remains in Canada to this day.
Now in our time..it has evolved into the corporation...mega and global..again..wealth and power in the hands of few compared to the masses who are dependent upon their kindness to give them employ and freedoms
Lately..the powers desire our rights to be curtailed some... national security the cry..when in fact..it is an opportunity to regain control in an every widening market and populational dynamic.
Sort of ..we know whats best for you.
Multi level Insurance..you can hardly own,or operate anything legally without it...guess who Britian gave that to.
I better stop here..before I get into hot water!
I somewhat agree that he would be pleased to hear that we are the "World's lone super power," but I do not think he would be amazed. Remember, our Founding Fathers believed they had created the greatest new form of government that would endure.
Perhaps Hamilton would not have been so outraged with the encroachment of the Federal Government, but I can assure you that Jefferson would have reacted just as described. As Walter Williams often states, our sytem of taxation is tantamount to taking our paycheck and handing 40-50% to a perfect stranger. I really think we have run out of excuses for allowing what our Federal Government has done to us.
-British troops were not removed from US soil until around 1800. They occupied western forts west and north of Penn. and along the Ohio.
"...British class and file remained..so did the families and their money..."
-The average British "grunt" didn't come over here with his family, and had precious little money. Those who did have both were the upper eschlons of the officer corps, aristrocrats all. They had very little reason-- if any-- to remain in America. And what the heck is this "class and file"? Surely you aren't suggesting that before the Revoluntairy War the citizens of colonial America were all pure and equal.
As for the assertion that "seperation of class" and "rights of priviledge" was the underlining cause of the War Between the States, well...that certinly is a new angle, I'll grant you that.
"Real Americans would never have given up their rights without a fight."
Well, they did. And now, we are paying the price! Those who would destroy all that the Founding Fathers accomplished by daring to establish a new nation based on the magnificient prose in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution have very nearly succeeded.
There are a few of us who recognize what has happened and is happening to the wonderful Republic the Founders established. Our assignment, class, is simply stated, to restore the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution.
Are we up to the task?
Lord! I hope so. If we fail, we fail not only ourselves, but we fail each and every American who gave of his or her all to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic"
And, we fail our children, our grandchildren and all future generations to come!
Wake up America!
I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.
[Thomas Jefferson, letter to Benjamin Rush, 1800.]
