LOS ANGELES -- The California Republican gubernatorial primary is set to intensify today with the first television ad of the political season, a 60-second spot from former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan.
The ad focuses on Riordan's record as mayor and will run in almost all the state's media markets, except for Los Angeles, where Riordan is already known, senior strategist Don Sipple said Monday.
``The average Californian will be exposed to it numerous times over the time that it's on the air,'' Sipple said.
The planned ad signals a new and more visible phase of the campaign for the March 5 primary.
Television ads are considered critical to reaching the 15.6 million registered voters in sprawling California. More money was spent last year on political ads here than in any other state.
Sipple said more than $1 million is being spent on the ad, which will air for about two weeks, but he declined to specify how much. Airing a commercial to reach all of the major markets for a week can cost from $1 million to $2 million.
Aides to Riordan's competitors for the primary -- Secretary of State Bill Jones and Los Angeles businessman Bill Simon -- said they too would start running ads soon, but they declined to specify when.
Democratic Gov. Gray Davis also plans to begin running ads sometime this month, campaign officials said.
I DON'T THINK SO.
Things have gotten so "challenging" here in California, we better hope that Riordan at least gets elected. I found myself routing for Democrat Hahn for LA Mayor as opposed to his Azatlan (sp?), Mexican Facist, racist munchkin opponent, Villagrosa (sp?)...
Remember, everything now seems to be a matter or degrees..."will you have your eggs well done or with the yolks cooked?"
What exactly are you hoping for if Riordan gets there? Someone who behaves a bit like a Republican? Well you will be sadly disappointed.
RIORDAN is MORE liberal than Davis. Get that through your thick skull! He has Clinton and Gore's poeple running his campaign. He fired all his Republican campaigns taff when he became Mayor of LA. He's endorsed Feinstein twice over Republican candidates.
Riordan wants to confiscate guns by way of door-to-door searches. Riordan criticized Wilson AND Feinstein for NOT wanting to raise taxes. IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT?
WHAT ARE YOU HOPING FOR FROM THE MAN?????? -- Whatever it is. You won't get it.
Snake oil anyone? It cures everything.
Yup... Which is why Davis will likely cheat political death and win by running to the right of Slick Dickie. Davis has already started. He almost plagiarized GHWB in his state of the State address when he pledged to oppose any new tax increases. He's also pressuring Senate Dems to pass the Federal economic stimulus package.
Which leads us to the State GOP and its leadership...
As many have likely noted on this forum, I'm one of those who believes that individuals have the right to fry their brains with their drug of choice. It's your brain; smoke it if ya want. The same holds true for the State GOP's leadership people. If they want to do drugs, that's their business. This doesn't mean, however, that I think that drugs are a good thing. This enthusiasm for Riodan by the GOP dope fiends is an example of what drugs can do to your thinking. While they have the right to torch what few neurons they have, I still think that the entire State leadership needs to spend a few weeks at Betty Ford drying out. Then, perhaps, they will see just how badly Davis will whip their butts if they run with Riordan. But until they get straight, there's little hope for them.
(Of course, I'm assuming that they're on drugs. They have to be to think that Riordan could win. Nobody could be that stupid! ...could they?)
Right on ...
If you read my post carefully, I don't EXPECT much from the RINO except that I think (unfortunately) in California at this point in time, he's probably the best bet.
Keep in mind that I vigorously support Hahn for LA major -- a total left-wing Democrat -- ONLY because his opponent was Villagarosa (sp?) who is a RACIST Hispanic who wants to return the whole of the Southwestern US to Mexico.
He is no better than Davis. In fact he is worse than Davis.
Politics is not a game where you cheer for the guys wearing the same cap as you -- just because they are wearing the same cap. It's about issues and policies and a candidates approach to governing.
Since Riordan is NO different than Davis - why bother to spend money and campaign to make the guy governor?
Bill Simon is a Reagan Republican who can excite the Republican base. Remember, electoral swings are not about people changing their minds. It's all about who decides to vote in an election year. A swing of less than 5% in turnout can have a momentous effect.
California Republicans have lost in recent years because our voters have stayed home. Bill Simon can excite that base with a promise of a return to rational, responsible policies.
