Zaftig: The Case for Curves
Zaftig: The Case for Curves ^ | 1999 | Edward St Paige

these hips are big hips
they need space to
move around in.
they don't fit into little
pretty places. these hips
are free hips.
they don't like to be held back.
these hips have never been enslaved,
they go where they want to go
they do what they want to do.
these hips are mighty hips.
these hips are magic hips.
I have known them
to put a spell on a man and
spin him like a top!

Lucille Clifton (quoted in chapter 23)

This thread has NOTHING to do with sneak attacks on our Constitutional rights!

In 1892 (!) Mary Steele wrote a book called, "Beauty of Form and Grace of Vesture," in which she writes:

"If you have been made on a generous plan, you have qualities that littleness can never possess. Who with any authority has said that slender persons are of the best type? Only carry yourself well, be reposeful and stately, with a brain that sits supremely on the throne of your being, and you may come into your kingdom of power and love."

Pretty cool advice, huh? (Nowadays, of course, girls are advised that the pathway to their "kingdon of power and love" is taveled by turning their body into either that of an eight year old boy, or of a shot-putter...)

I find most fashionably thin women to be unattractive. The Rubenesque form is the traditional Western ideal of feminine beauty.

At this moment, I am seated in full view of a Jennifer Lopez lookalike plus about 8 pounds and minus maybe an inch in height.

Having recently picked up a couple of inch around the waist, she thinks she's a "walrus." I know better. : )

The book "Zaftig..." has lots of interesting quotes from people in the fashion industry and art world. Monique Pillard (apparently a woman in advertising) is quoted:

"I sent two models on a trip together to do bathing suits. One girl called me and said, 'Oh, my God, I wish I was her; she's got such a lean body with perfect muscle tone.' And the other one called me up and said, 'I was so ashamed of my figure, because she's so womanly.'"

The trouble with a book like this is that, today, if anyone were to give it to a woman as a present, to try and ease her mind about how wonderful a woman can look being something more than a Twiggy, she would be 1) insulted; and 2) terrified that she was so fat people were giving her books about weight...

Does FR have a higher proportion of admirers of a full feminine figure than the general population, I wonder?

I'd say so. I'm one of those men. The reason I like Slavs, Celts (Irish and Scots), and Latinas are for their hips. Someone brought up the idea that the "typical" super-thin supermodel type (which my favorite models Heidi Klum, Laetitia Casta, Jennifer Lopez, and others defy)is a gay man's idea of feminine beauty (since most fashion designers are gay men), and I think this may be an explanation, and it has filtered down the everyone else. It disgusts me in a way, since the majority of the women on my college campus are the thin "sculpted" body look type. Give me some curves!!!!

It's a grownup thing. As one's tastes mature, one appreciates feminine curves.

Yes, I'm wearing my flamesuit, why do you ask? :)

Zaftig women tend to have 2 other things going for them skinny women dont have: the left thing and the right thing (*)(*)

And they're real - and they're fabulous (unlike those fake silicone things!)
