Hmmm Gastonia...haven't heard that name in a while. My father took all of us there many many years ago (while we were travelling down south) to see the "best Christmas lights in the USA". Must have been too early in the season...not a Christmas light in sight. We (at 6,10, 14, 15 etc) razzed him to no end every time we pulled up to a traffic light. Oooohhh there's a red one....ahhhh now it's greeen....wheee yellow!

Ever play golf at Green Meadows?

Oh dear, I hope she's alright. If she needs any help, free mail. No snow out here yet. Our local weather folks said, no snow for us just a dusting. But looking at the weather channel it looks like we will get snow.
My daughter lives in Winston Salem, and she said it's snowing.

Good point, Overtaxed. As you probably know, the majority of Charlotteans are transplants. I didn't say "native" Charlotteans -- I just said that most don't seem to know how to drive on snow and ice. There was a certain "ice and snow" savvy in terms of driving in Ohio that I don't see here for the most part -- like don't slam on your brakes when you begin to slide -- that kind of savvy. Hubby just came in from work -- said that there were numerous fender benders (and cars in ditches!!!! Didn't catch the license tags ;-D). Maybe they just underestimate how bad the roads are here versus New Jersey and New York.

There is a big advantage to living in a very small town in a rural area in the south like we did for over 25 years. Though mention of the term "snow plow" brings giggles, all the farmers get out with their tractors and clear even the side roads. Our road wasn't even paved but the farmers would get it cleared.

Several years ago, we had a big Christmas Eve snow (17") .... two days later, we headed for Wilmington to see our mothers. Got all the way there with no problems ..... but couldn't get into Wilmington .... they were still snowed in a week later.

That was the year that Wilmington got more snow than any city in the state ..... several of these coastal storms came up .... the beaches got clobbered and inland stayed dry.

Once and again for all you people who bash us for shutting down over a little bit of snow, we don't have the tax revenues to buy snow plows for a once a year event.

Exactly correct. We do not spend our money (in our little county) on snow equipment. It would be a waste of the taxpayer's money.

Instead, we have 5 "build in days" on the school calender. Let them fall where they may!

If there is a threat of snow, keep the kids home.

"Remember.............STAY AWAY FROM THE MORONS IN 4-WHEEL-DRIVE VEHICLES IN THE SOUTH!!!!!!!! (when it snows, that is..............), and especially if you hear "Hey, y'all..........watch thee-is!!!!!!!""

Oh my God -- I'm laughing so hard the tears are running down my face -- yes indeedy, have witnessed that too!!!

I lucked out. Live in Wakefield (yeah..........hold your nose up in the air when you say that......LOL), and they just opened up a new Food Lion just right down the street; the locals just haven't discovered it yet, as if it's "hiding in plain sight" or they just feel self-conscious shopping in such a "plebian" establishment. Ahem. So anyways, I go in and it's LOADED with everything with a handful of patrons. I stocked up on milk and other essentials (like beef jerky, obviously), the rest of the usual (only a few days' worth, though...:) ).

I'm not cutting ANYONE down. It was just a fact.
And closing down a military base was a very serious thing. Poorman WAS confused; he'd never seen such a thing.

I was raised in Southern Cal, and almost never saw snow in my neighborhood.
When it did happen to snow 2 inches' worth one year, everything stopped.

You went to the wrong place .... it's McAdenville, right outside Gastonia. It is really beautiful .... this year it was prettier than ever. There are hundreds of trees all done up in red, green, and white. The link below doesn't do it justice .... and the pics are several years old .... but it gives you an idea. You should have seen my grandkids (ages 2 1/2 and 3 1/2) when we took them last week...... WOW!

I'm not a golfer .... :-(

Idea: like Shreveport did that year, fire up the road graders and have THEM clear the roads.

Thanks Howlin. Yes it sure does look like it's headed my way. Here is a doppler reading from weather.com

Gee I like living out here. I'm a California gal who grew up in the desert. This is so exciting for me, LOL.

We've actually got quite a coating of the white stuff now -- 2-3 inches have already accumulated. It is absolutely beautiful outside. I intend on taking an evening stroll with my son in a bit. This happens here so rarely, I want to take advantage of it. I love the way the air smells when it snows. Cocooning tomorrow sounds like a great idea -- after running around in the snow, tossing some snowballs, making snow angels...

Sometimes I forget I'm not 12 years old anymore!!!

I guess the good news is that if all of the electricity goes out, the milk won't spoil. Unbelievable, yet funny.

My husband was going to stop and pick up some items for dinner -- lettuce, salad dressing, etc. Couldn't even get into the parking lot of the Supermarket in Monroe. Of course, several years ago when we had an ice storm, deliveries of food items were delayed to stores -- that was interesting. People who don't know how to put up stores of non-perishables would have a real problem with anything longer than about a week or so.
