We Southerners are always quite amused by the reports of Yankee cities shutting down because it got up to 100 or so, and people start dropping like flies.

Ain't that the truth? My Yankee cousin can't take anything much over 80 ...just when it's getting comfortable.

Glad you're getting in on the fun, too.

We missed that big storm last year ..... had a really beautiful snow here that was just gorgeous (a couple of inches) ..... and melted within a few hours. We go through Waxhaw and the back way to Monroe when we head home -- you can still see the effects of last year's storm over that way. Lots of fallen trees, etc. ..... looks a lot like the hurricane damage farther east.

I got a report for you. On the way home stopped at the grocery store that wasn't Harris Teeter to pick up my drinks, dip, and cat food for the kitten. I thought' What the heck I'll get some chips as well'. About that time, an annoucement came over the loudspeakers about apparently the latest milk truck being there. I'm not lying when I say half the store of people rushed to the back of the store with the managers close behind which also had the effect of clearing out most of the lines making checkout quick and easy.

The cashier informed me that today they have had to have crowd control because there are people hording as much milk and bread to themselves as they can. They had thought about calling in the cops but apparently it is happening about everywhere on the Southeast side of Raleigh. Again I ask you, would this have happened in the Raleigh/Cary area 10-15 years ago

"few people in Charlotte know how to drive on snow and ice"

Make that "Few people any where in the South".

But we sure know how to drive on gravel roads. ;-)

I'm live in Central Charlotte- and it's snowing like crazy. I hear reports on weather station to expect 2-4 inches and on the local airport weather station to expect 3-6 inches. I think it's suppossed to snow alot on Thursday as well, so I expect the city will be shut down. I'm from Ohio and it's hard to get used to snow shutting everything down.

Take a drive out and you'll understand. We are NOT equiped for it. And, btw, nobody comes by to clean off your driveway. If anything, the plow -- IF it comes near your house -- will smash the snow up in FRONT of your driveway. :-)

In defense of southern drivers who don't know how to drive on snow.... we don't drive on snow, we drive on ice. The temps during the day melt it all so we don't have snow to contend with... we skate in our cars on the ice. We have only one or two snowfalls a year so the cities don't keep a lot of snow clearing equipment and only major roads get salted.

However, common sense should prevail. Back in the early 70's when there was a major storm here, the city's mayor (Maynard Jackson) came up with a very creative solution to snow on the roads, and no snow plows... he sent out the road building equipment and steam rollers to pack the snow down so people could drive. Instead of the snow melting during the day, the steam rollers created a sheet of ice 4" thick that took over a week to melt. LOL

"Make that "Few people any where in the South". When poorman and I were stationed at Barksdale AFB (Shreveport, Louisiana), a storm like the current one hit the area. First rain, then freezing rain, then sleet, then snow. All told, about 3 inches or so of frozen precipitation was on the ground. The towns shut down. Shreveport/Bossier City shut down. I-20 shut down. Even the base shut down. Poorman was confused; he's a South Dakotan and THEY don't shut down for 3 lousy inches of winter weather.

Once and again for all you people who bash us for shutting down over a little bit of snow, we don't have the tax revenues to buy snow plows for a once a year event. And please excuse our driving and excitement. This is our little thread and if you wanna cut us down go somewhere else.( Your jonesin my buzz man.)

Can someone please tell me how to post a photo.I've got a shot of Katie, the blacklab, splashin' in the lake and snow pics.

We've had about 3" and still coming down in West Ga.

Here in Fallon Nevada it is 45F and raining.

But about an hour ago (3:45pm PST) I got a call from my brother who lives in West Columbia SC and he was hysterical. He said there was 3 inches of snow on the ground and more falling. More snow than he had ever seen in his life. He said he was sent home from work at Noon EST. About half an hour later I got a call from my other brother who lives in Lexington SC. He is a manager for a Piggly Wiggly store and he said his store has been packed all day and now the shelves are bare. He was real excited too.

I just can't get excited over snow. I hate the stuff. I guess it was the winter I spent at Great Lakes Illinois in boot camp and "A" school that cured me of liking snow.

And one more thing; as soon as the weatherman's lips even start to form the "S", on the phone to my buddy at Merril Lynch" I'll take 100 shares colonial bread, 100 mayfield milk, and 200 of that auto body supply company."

I guess we get it so rarely -- especially "big" snow -- that we just go crazy.......and nobody wants to be out on the roads down here. We have like 15 road scrapers!
