A report that racism against Indians and a lack of leadership are preventing a resolution to a Western water war has outraged many California and Oregon residents.

The report was authored by Oregon State University and the University of California after the federal government cut off irrigation water to hundreds of farmers in the Klamath valley to protect the endangered sucker fish and coho salmon.

The Klamath tribes view the fish as sacred gifts, and have banded with environmental groups to keep the spigots to area farms dry.
The draft report under review said there is an atmosphere of "farmers vs. Indians" and that a strain of racism is running "quietly beneath the surface."

Let me get this straight: The Indians want to shut down the farmers, so the farmers don't like the Indians any more (they aren't helping them to raise as much money! the horror!), so therefore the farmers are racist. What a crock of sh-t.

You can dislike a group of people for specific reasons, without being a bigot.

The Washington Times seems to have written a balance article, unlike the NY Times (AP) one you posted.

I don't blame the Indians for exploiting the situation to their advantage, but I do get tired of hearing the word "sacred" applied to all sorts of items or features that the enviros are interested in. The Indians around my neck of the woods have an economic interest in the salmon because they remain a hunter-gatherer society, and their rights to the salmon are enforced by treaty. But I would like to know how the fish are any more "sacred" to them than they are to the average avid sports fisherman. It seems to me that the average sports fisherman treats fish with way more respect than the Indians do.

racism hype is seeded in one event that occurred Dec. 1, when three men drove through Chiloquin, Ore., home of the Klamath tribes offices, firing shotguns at street signs and yelling "sucker lovers."

Wonder if these were the same guys who spiked the lynx hair in the federal lands out west?

Or perhaps some of their buddies?

You just can't trust the enviro wackos... they probably did it.

Thanks for the headsup. There are actually many different reports that were released. These are available online and can be commented on by the public until Jan. 25. In addition, the "Hardy Phase II" report on recommendations for minimum Klamath River flows for coho has just been released for comment until Jan. 20.

"The Oregonian reported that farms lost about $71 million in revenue without the water, and the loss to the regional economy totaled about $134 million, about 3.2 percent of the total. "

Too bad reporters do not translate these dry facts into human terms, i.e. the actual effects on the farmers, ranchers, and businessmen and their families. Of course, the whole action is predicated on a fallacy so trying to insert facts is an exercise in futility.

The son of a bitching main stream press does everything but stay focused on the action! Rule of law? The farmers were trampled, pummeled and hung out to dry, by a bunch of clintoon cronies on their last gasp of air to try and discredit the Bush administration.
