It sorta just snuck up on me. My old nanao monitor started winking at me, the ole gal felt like dropping by Comp USA and the next thing I know I'm rolling out the door with a new VAIO tower, a Samsung syncMaster flat screen LCD and a Canon bubble jet (there goes my buy American bluster).
I wasn't going to do it. Really. The thought of venturing past my garden path was too scary. The ole Dell XPS 200 and windows 95 was so .... well, familliar. I was afraid taking the leap would be just too painful. Boy was I wrong. Mama was in the mood to spend money and ya just can't go against that flow. Might not happen again in a coon's age.
Been hearing not so good things about Dell and the prices have been plunging so that one has to wonder about what they're putting in those things these days. Besides I wanted the security of just being able to walk the box into the service dept. if I had a prob and actually getting the thing back in days rather than weeks. The Sony seemed like a solid machine and not a conglomeration of god knows whose parts. The flat screen just knocked my eyes out. XP made my old OS look like a cheep 40's cartoon. So I jumped.
Despite my desire to get in a dig at Bill Gates whenever possible I'm going with 'internet exploder' for now. doesn't seem so bad and I'm not really missing Netscape ... yet. (I may pinch him a bit by dropping Office and going with Corel) I haven't had any trouble with XP whatsoever. I've deleted some junk they had in the box and I've added several programs. I'm all over the net and not a glitch. ON THE FIRST DAY. I can't believe I waited so long. I love the whole package. AND for some unknowable (for me) reason my internet connection is chunking along at twice the speed of before though my dialup connection is the same lame ole 28k and I already had a new top line modem in the ole box. Go figure.
So if any of y'all out there are like me and afraid of the change .... don't be. It's wonderful.
The XP computer came with an ethernet card. My hubby bought a Netgear SB104 Network Starter Kit which came with 2 network cards & a hub. I put the network card in the old machine, it says it's working properly. Hooked up all the cables, plugged in the hub, and ran the network connection wizard. It said it worked.
The hub seems to be connecting to both computers, it has a light at each connection, the light is lit if the computers are turned on, off if the computers are turned off.
So why can't my computers see each other? What do I do next? (I'm gonna be going back to work looking like Sinead O'Connor if this keeps up!)
btw, perhaps I should mention I'm using a dialup connection for internet. No DSL or cable available here yet. :(
They will NOT ping each other, which WINDOWS says is a hardware problem. However, the hub seems to be able to tell if each computer is turned on.
There is a cable from each network card to the wall, then there's a cable from the wall back to the hub. We're a little worried about the fact that we installed the connectors on each end of the wall cable...that might be the big OOPS?
Waiting for my son to finish burning a CD so that I can bring the old computer downstairs, and just run the cords that came with it back to the hub, to see if it works that way.
Or maybe I'll direct connect the 2, get my files off, and let him do without internet, since he's more interested in burning CDs than letting me work on it? :P~
Note: since you're running this behind the walls use only one crossover cable. If you use 2 you'll swap the pins twice thus negating the purpose of using crossover cables.
But check to see if you have file sharing enabled on each computer.
Not enough info, yet.
What are the IP addresses of each machine?
What is the subnet mask?
Can you ping other computers (on the internet) from each?
Answer me those questions, and I'll tell you how to fix it. You do not need any other protocols - the fewer you can run with, the better. You should be able to run everything over tcp/ip. You definately DO NOT need IPX (Novel's protocol).
Just what the instructions said: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2
What is the subnet mask?
255.255.255.0
Can you ping other computers (on the internet) from each?
From the host, yes. The client, since the network isn't working, doesn't have internet access at the moment.
If it has the correct drivers, have you tried both Netgear cards in the old system? That would be my second place to investigate. Sometimes, you get bad hardware out of the box.
What kind of NIC is in the new box? It could be a conflict between it and the netgear. I've seen stranger things happen. Another possibility for investigative purposes would be to put the netgear NICs in both the boxes and see if that works.
I'm no expert here but I'm wondering if the IP addresses you're using may have been a misprint. My home network is using 192.168.1.xxx. It may be worth a try to change that ZERO you have to ONE.
