I have talked to several good jazz combo musicians in Austin and San Antonio, and they say that the days of Big Bands are probably gone forever--because the leaders/empresarios can't pay the salaries for large orchestras.
This is a shame. Even Harry Connick, Jr. and Wynton M. may be forced to do "pick-up" concerts like the progressive country bands have started doing.

Well, since no one has mentioned Louis Jordan and his Timpany Five, the inventors of rock'n'roll some argue, that leaves only one other choice, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band.

I write-in Miff Mole on the ballot when I don't like either candidate. I've been doing that for years. But only Miff, never Wingy Manone, Zez Confrey, or Jimmie Lunceford.

Didn't we just do this? And no, I really don't play saxophone, never played with Billy Taylor or Cab Calloway or Anita O'Day, never soloed at the Savannah Jazz Festival, and have no idea who Maynard Ferguson is, or why Alamo-Girl thinks I do...

I saw Harry Connick in Buffalo about 11 years ago. He was terrific. It was interesting that his audience was from teenagers to great-grandparents, and they ALL loved his show. He drew a tremendous crowd. NOTE TO ENTERTAINERS: Harry sings the old Broadway songs and the forty songs and EVERYBODY loves them. And, SHOCK, they all have melodies.

U2--they're about as big as you can get.I just love U2! They are my very favorite group, now and forever!
To: maestro
Huh? If it's #1, it must be what Kenny G plays... He's #1! Yeah, that's it... Who's Steve Lacy? He uses those #1 reeds too...
To: mtngrl@vrwc
Okay, you're cute and all that, but do you really want to claim U2 as your favourite big band... Big in this case actually means size of the band, not how much of a product they sell... So I'm going to designate you as a dumass, until proven otherwise. I can almost forgive Laura Ingraham for such idiocy. Almost. So, you might have a chance.
Test: Give me the real names of Boner and Egg. Including their real names...
And read American Psycho. No, it's not an autobiography.

I often play Barry Manilow's Big Band album. Some of the bands are still around in a form. I understood that swing was the fad on college campuses a couple of years ago. Perhaaps the only way left for kids to rebel against the hipie generation is to turn into their grandparents.
