Shoe Bomber Shocker: Phone Calls to 9/11 Terrorist Intercepted

Telephone calls between Flight 63 shoe bomber Richard Reid and indicted 9/11 "20th hijacker" Zacarias Moussaoui were intercepted by British intelligence late last year, London's Guardian newspaper reports in Sunday's editions.

The calls, which were apparently tape recorded, "directly linked Bromley-born Reid to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network," but MI5 intelligence agents did not realize implication of the conversations until it was too late, the Guardian said.

The intelligence lapse was condemned Saturday night as a serious blunder by Oliver Letwin, a Tory Party opponent of Labour Party Home Secretary David Blunkett, who complained, "One would expect action to have been taken earlier. The Home Secretary will need to give a convincing explanation of the reasons for the delay."

Reid and Moussaoui were reportedly in telephone contact right up until the time Moussaoui left for Pakistan on Dec. 9, 2000 to attend an al-Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan.

Abdul Haqq Baker, leader of the South London mosque where both terrorists worshipped, told NBC News on Thursday that he wasn't sure whether the two had any contact at his mosque.

But, said Baker, he was "certain" Reid and Moussaoui had met through an external study group they attended run by Muslim militants in the area.

Preferably through a camera in the nose of a rapidly approaching laser guided missile.

just my opinion.

Colonel Gaddafi agrees--and, ironically, or not so, he's right:

"Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has entered the debate on terrorism - telling a TV interviewer that the US might just as well bomb London if it is serious about fighting terrorism.

"If the United States wants seriously to eradicate terrorism, the first capital that should be pounded with cruise missiles is London," Colonel Gaddafi said on the Arabic satellite news channel al-Jazeera.

"It is the shelter of terrorism," he added, referring to charges that Islamic militants suspected of violence are protected by Britain's policies on political asylum."

We need to un-tie the hands of the CIA and let them infiltrate these mosques. If we don't get a handle on these radical Muslims, the next time it could be nukes instead of commercial airliners. This is why we need to stick with the plan of going after all of these terrorist groups. When the liberals in Congress succeeded in restricting our intelligence agencies from hiring "BAD" people to infiltrate groups like Al-Qaeda, they made it a lot easier for Cowards like OBL to organize and pull of the last 10 years of terrorist acts and paved the way for 9/11.

Hopefully! the liberals who believe that through sensitivity, understanding and reviewing our foriegn policy, we will be able to change the hearts of these cowardly terrorist, can now see that they were wrong, but I doubt it. When we finish destroying Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, we MUST continue rounding up all of these terrorist cells and allow the CIA to do what they are paid to do! and that's identifying these groups and destroying them.

So much for the spin that Reid was just a lone simpleton who might have had some help. If these tapes still exists it proves an alQueda link to Reid and a definite link to known terrorists. This may be a great break since his charges won't involve a death penalty maybe he will roll over information?

We're getting close to being able to implant computer chips and cameras onto real bugs that we can direct by remote control.

I don't think so. Mosquitois the diminutive form of musca - Latin for fly.

You may be correct, I may have it backwards...

The mosques are named after the bugs.

They said he wasn't sophisticated enough to be Al Qaeda material. I wonder if we've just crippled their network to the point that this is the level we're now dealing with?

I always wondered why people assume Al Quaida will only go for big scores. That makes no sense. Some of their people are capable of big hijackings, some can do bioterror, some can build a boat-bomb, and some might only be able to manage a baggage bomb or shoe bomb. Some might only be able to slit the throat of a bus driver, or blow up a fertilizer plant in France. Why assume that if it isn't a nuke it isn't Al Quaida? They trained thousands. There has to be a broad spectrum of ability and specialization.
