Kidnapping Lands 1 in Custody; 1 Still on the Loose Sioux Falls, SD, Dec. 27 - A Sioux Falls man is in jail tonight accused of kidnapping a 6-year-old boy. Police started looking for the little boy around 3:30 yesterday afternoon after his mother reported he was missing. |
They found the little boy in Paul Donahue's car around 7:45 and arrested Donahue. They caught up with him on a routine traffic stop. One of the officers noticed a little boy in Donahue's car who looked like the missing six-year-old. Donahue told police he was just bringing the boy back home but they didn't believe his story. Police returned the boy to his mother. They say he wasn't hurt. Police are trying to figure out why donahue took the boy. Meanwhile detectives continue following up on leads in last weeks kidnapping. According to police, donahue was working at the time and he's not a suspect in that crime. Police say this recent kidnapping is just another reminder for parents to keep a close eye on small children. Lt. Nick Boschee, Sioux Falls Police, says, "It's not a good idea to let young children be out by themselves. That's the message we've always relayed to parents and this accentuates that concern." Now, you probably already know how to keep your kids safe but sometimes things like this bear repeating -Make sure children always have some one to walk to and from school with. -Make sure you and your kids have a password to use if someone different has to pick them up in an emergency. -And if a child sees something out of the ordinary, make sure they know they should tell a parent or a grown-up. |
A big sigh of relief for a Sioux Falls mom.....and an entire neighborhood.
Her missing boy is home and he wasn't molested.
We broke the story last night on Dakota First news at ten about a 23-year-old Sioux Falls man who was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a first grader.
It was the second such kidnapping in the last week, but now police are saying the two cases are unrelated.
KSFY'S Shelley Keohane was the first to bring you this story.
Four intense hours of searching turned into a happy ending for a little boy and his family Wednesday night.
It could also mean 2 life sentences for a 23-year-old Sioux Falls man who police say kidnapped the 6-year-old just a block from the child's home.
23-year-old Paul Donahue was indicated late this afternoon by a Minnehaha County Grand Jury for two counts of kidnapping.
The first count maintains that Donahue kidnapped the child to commit a felony.
The states attorney says based on evidence the grand jury believes Donahue meant to sexually abuse the little boy.
The second count just deals with the kidnapping.
In court this afternoon the prosecuting attorney called Donahue an extreme threat to the community.
"We believe anybody who's involved in the kidnapping of a 6-year-old child is a severe threat to the community," says Minnehaha County States Attorney Dave Nelson.
Donahue is being held at the Minnehaha County jail, his bond is set at $100,000.
Police say he has no connection with last week's case involving a 7-year-old girl that had been abducted and sexually abused.

But there was a second kidnapping? What's the scoop on that case? Was the child released or is he/she still missing?
"He was such a good boy. He's never lied to me."
No "a cop" did his job, to be sure he did it well but it was just one cop!
We sometimes forget cops are real people, sometimes depressed and/or hungover but thankfully today this ONE cop was ready and on the ball!!
So the next time you get stopped and the cop starts nosing around, maybe you don't know what he's looking for!!
I know--isn't that tremendous! We got quite a bit of coverage about it in northeast Wisconsin.
It was great police work--I heard 100 detectives in Chicago, plus the FBI, with help from the Center from Missing and Exploited Children and intense publicity--that brought that baby home to her parents. The latest is that the Chicago kidnapper did this before--in 1987, in Washington state.
I hope none of these slime that mess with our children ever get out of prison. What I wish for these people in prison can't be put on a public website.
I hope there was enough evidence left on her to get some DNA--and that she's old enough to tell the cops what happened and get a description of the creep.
I hope the media in the area are warning parents and that the parents are extra-cautious with their children.
We had a creep that was preying on children in our area last spring--he kidnapped two girls, tried to kidnap two more. The first girl got away; the second was beaten and raped, tied up, had her eyes, nose and mouth duct-taped and thrown in some brush. Despite her injuries, she was able to work herself free and get to the closest farmhouse & called the cops. From her description, they were able to get a very good sketch of the guy--and his wife turned him in. He committed suicide in jail the day after the DNA results came back. I mourned for less than a nanosecond.
You're kinder than I am!!
You're kinder than I am!!
I counted this when calculting my mourning time, "Oh."
I always knew there was something about that guy I didn't like!
What's that? Eh? Oh! Paul Donahue. (Is he related?)
The best part was that he was a prison guard--at a state prison, Kettle Moraine, I do believe. He wasn't going to have any fun in the Big House.
The kid had him down--she even remembered his very cigarette-smoky breath and his cigarette-stained fingers. I think she was in the 8-10 year old range. I hope they can get the same type of information from the six-year old rape victim.
Do you remember that show "It takes a Thief" where Alexander Munday always figured out an ingenious way to swipe the jewels? You can actually have a little respect for that type of criminal, but...!
A grown man that snatches a kid, only death is the proper reward!!
These are serial crimes. He'll strike--or try to strike again. It may not be in your city, but like the guy we had, he'll do it somewhere in the region, so they catch him before he harms another child.
But twice in a week? In your area, like our area, these crimes are a huge shock. It's that "It doesn't happen around here," when these things happen everywhere--and rural America isn't spared.
