My sister's view of Fox News
Posted on 12/26/2001 4:01:13 AM PST by cantfindagoodscreenname
Yesterday, around the Christmas table, my sister made an interesting comment about Fox News. We don't get Fox News because we only have basic cable and I mentioned that. After I said that, she said, "Well, Fox News is kind of like the National Enquirer. There's a lot of sensationalism on it." Now, I've seen Fox News from time to time at other people's homes and it looks like a great news station. Obviously, it is growing by leaps and bounds. And, of course, all my fellow Freepers love it. But, I'm wondering if she's alone in her views. Do other people say this about Fox News? I've never heard anyone say anything like this about it before and wonder why she thinks it's sensational.

Does she actually get Fox News? It's a great network, actually. It does tend toward flashier graphics, sound effects, etc., etc., but they DO cover stories and issues that the other networks wouldn't dare touch. That leads to their critics' sneering and snarling............but it's just jealousy, for FNC is kicking their collective butts in ratings in a MAJOR way.
I've had it now for about two years and just love it; hardly watch anything else on the tube.

I would say it is like the New York Post. Political coverage is excellent, but by golly they will drop everything if there is a car chase!! LOL!

The Shepard Smith (6 PM Central) format comes on a bit strong but that's the "wave of the future" for TV news according to the consultants.
* A consultant is like a guy who knows all the sexual positions of the Kama Sutra but doesn't know any women.
You can look for your local TV station newscasts to start looking more and more like that fast-paced (keep their attention) presentation. It is based on the attention span (or lack thereof) of the average viewer and how to deliver news to him in a way that he will still "get it".
For some, this may look like National Enquirer whereas in reality it more resembles radio when it made the switch from big band music to rock 'nb' roll format.

"Every quarter-hour he's on air, we get higher ratings," a Fox spokesman told us yesterday.
I love the Fox News Philosophy: Even though our reporter lies when he is on the air we don't care becasue we get higher ratings and the truth is not all that important. This sounds more like the philosophy of the National Enquirer.
FOX NEWS:
OUR REPORTERS LIE
WE DON'T CARE

They fill the bottom third of the screen with graphics. This means that much of what their cameramen think will be broadcast is never seen by the audience.
They also cover only one, maybe two stories at a time. They spend millions on studios and anchors, but they seem to have only about three actual reporters out in the real world gathering information.

Your sister is a well endocrinated leftist as a result of school, college and the alphabet networks.
I learned something from reading this thread though. Leftists drivel is apparently like a narcotic for some and any time they're taken off of it, they begin to puke with withdrawal.
Go puke somewhere else, or go get your fix from dan ratherbiased.

Hume, Snow and Cavuto are always great. Other than that, mostly trash.
By the way, this doesn't mean that they're any worse than the other news outfits.

Thanks for all the quick feedback! I think I understand a little bit now why she said that. I really don't think it was a politically motivated statement on her part as she's not particulary a "political" person. I think my area will be getting Fox News in the spring and possibly as part of the basic service. At that point, I'll be able to see for myself what she and all of you have said about it.
Thanks!

They need to broaden their international coverage beyond Shep Smith's 80 second "Around The World," and maybe hook up with ITN or some other reputable international news agency (are there any?)
I'm ashamed to admit that for Afghanistan I often clicked over to CNN because they had more thorough overseas reporting. But the BS Detector was running at maximum power.

Fox News comes as close to straight, honest news reporting as you are likely to find on television. By no means does that mean it is perfect or even near perfect it's just better than all the others IMHO!

I was a little bit late going to work this morning and watched FOX AND FRIENDS. I think shows like that are designed for the nitwits out in viewing land. The only think I do not like about FNC is their weekend coverage. Rather lame, mostly repeats, and the Saturday stocks and market news is worse than the other talking heads programs. Lots of yelling and no one ever agrees on any stocks.
I enjoy FNC from 1700 on. Some Freeper said this some time back. FNC is not conservative or to the right. I think it does try to follow the we report, you decide formula. The other media outlets, which only present the left, liberal slant, sees it as conservative, since it does give some coverage to the other side.

My leftist sister said that, "Fox News is a dangerous, dangerous station."
I laugh every time I think about that. :-)

She's just parroting what she has been told.

Don't tell me she said this after the moose bit her, right?
