AIDS Activist Undergoes Liver Transplant Surgery
Houston Chronicle ^ | December 24, 2001

PITTSBURGH -- AIDS activist, author and playwright Larry Kramer underwent liver transplant surgery and was listed in serious condition Monday.

Kramer's doctors said his condition was improving and was about where it should be after the 12-hour surgery Friday.

Kramer, 66, spent seven months on the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's waiting list. He moved to Pittsburgh in early November to wait for an organ to become available. While many transplant centers oppose the surgery for HIV-positive patients, UPMC's Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute has performed 10 liver transplants on HIV-positive patients since 1997. Eight of the patients have survived. Kramer's HIV has been relatively well controlled, but he suffered from end-stage liver failure caused by hepatitis B.

"..."Pearl Harbor" gets better when the attack starts. Better meaning it's at the same time terrible, sad, and well filmed..."

Yeah... Watching that now.

The triage scene reminded me of a story I read recently quoting someone who'd been at the hospital that morning, and how they just dumped the dead and dying Japanese (pilots) in a pile out front.

'Enemy' was a word with clear meaning then.

I loved the local reaction to United Way campaign drives when living near Detroit. The local "rural" UW chapters would remind their members to designate where their monies went...the local UW chapters, not the Detroit ones filled with HIV positive crackheads.

Well, I don't object to the idea of a non-profit clearinghouse for local charities, in theory.

The problem is that liberals, dirty commie thieves that they are, smell that money and latch onto those organizations like stink on a monkey.

We donate as directly as possible now.

Mere minutes from 'twenty-oh-two' here...

Raising a glass to the good things here, and wishing for all of us a happy new year.

Heard something scratching the front door earlier...

Creepy sound. Thought it might be old Hannibal Peep.

Just a stray tomcat.

Signing off here now. Here's your chance to have the last word, Peep. (for a few hours anyway, LOL)

I certainly hope that you and Pepper plan to continue your conversation on into 2002. Maybe learn to mend fences; to see eye to eye; to find common ground....oh gosh, what am I saying? I love to see you two fight! Happy New Year. :)

Happy new year to you also.

I enjoy reading your posts and can't remember you posting anything that I disagreed with.

I hope next year is a good one for you and yours.

I went to bed not that much after midnight. They used to delay the ball dropping until we had our New Years moment, but not any more. (damn east coast dominated media... mumble... grumble...)

The only thing I have to do today is drive into town to check on an elderly relative. After that, I plan nothing at all. Laying around in my rack like this I know the CQ will come in and try to dump the Peep Duty on me, but I'm too lazy to stir very much.

"...I am sorry for contributing to the negative tone with the derogatory comments I made early in the discussion..."

Well, Mr. Bopepper, that's a gracious sentiment...

But I think that you're setting the bar too high for yourself. I wasn't genuinely offended by anything you've said here, and I've enjoyed our little back and forth enormously.

A little smart ass rough and tumble is good for the soul, buddy. I say no harm, no foul.

"...When my father-in-law died the donor people were pressuring to donate his skin, organs, the eyes. It really pissed me off how pushy they were. They wanted to skin him. Who knows what creep would have been given his parts..."

We're coming up on the first year anniversary of the death of a friend of mine's mother in law.

She died suddenly, of a stroke, and the family was left scrambling, sorting out details, finding the will, trying to determine what her wishes on this subject would be, etc.

The consensus was that she had wanted to 'donate her body to science', in the old school manner, for dissection by medical students.

The family was told, however, that the medical schools contacted by her attorney weren't interested. I gather that they get their cadavers primarily from third world countries these days. (I wonder if they have them 'custom killed to order'?)

Then the spare parts hyenas descended on them, and -as you described- were a bullying and abusive bunch. Had it been mine to do, I'd have cuffed them and sent them back to their dens, but I was just an observer...

To make a long story short, those damn butchers delivered a package to the mortician that resembled a purchase from a deli, down to the wrapping and string.

They decided it was impossible to make her look like anything other than a package of meat, so they opted to cremate her.

If any liberals got anything from her, I hope it's giving them fits.

Happy New Year, GussiedUp! Remember when that Mamas and Papas guy (can't remember his name) got a new donated liver after he blew his out from drinking and drugging, and then they caught him on camera gulping down alcoholic beverages?

OMG NO I had not heard of that! Was he the one who died this past year? Papa Phillips? Gomer Pile got a liver as well - I heard rumors about that one too but don't know anything about it. That's ghastly - he gets a 2nd chance but don't bother changing his ways....guess he figured if it took 3/4 of a lifetime to ruin one liver he wouldn't wear out the 2nd one in the remaining 1/4. Geesh!

Yes, it was Papa John.....one of those tabloid shows had an undercover camera and followed him into a bar day after day while he slurped down long island ice teas.

I didn't know that Gomer got a new liver too. Live and learn. :)

"...But you missed my point..."

There you go...

I didn't 'miss' your point, I ignored it.

I ignored it because I don't believe it's a valid one. I think it’s whiny, and woosy, in fact.

The world, and the folks in it, are never going to 'do things your way' Peep. If you need a lot of that kind of stroking in your life, you need to head on out to Burger King.

If a little rough and tumble is too much for you, you'd be well advised to turn tail when you encounter it. You'll grow old and gray (and disappointed) waiting for other people to accommodate you, buddy. Hey, bottom line here, most of us just don't care whether you have a thick enough skin to survive. 'K'?

My take is that the kitchen is just 'too hot' here to suit you.

Maybe a return to DU is in order?

How can you enjoy a one-sided series of personal attacks? For the most part, I did not engage in personal attacks while you and other Freepers attacked me. I deliberately tried to avoid attacking you personally.

Your very first words, in your very first post on this thread (posted from you to DWSUWF) are copied here:

"You are one sorry excuse for a human being"

Being that you are a liberal, it doesn't surprise me that you are now crying "foul" but frankly you asked for the wonderfully crafted word-whipping you took (as masterfully delivered by DWSUWF) by shooting that initial hateful salvo. Maybe you should take some of that advice you so readily have dished out, eh? :)

It always amazes me how leftys can dish it out but when they find an overwhelming response, which they can't take, they cry "victim"....silly liberals!
