That's too bad. I loved him on the Sports Reporters.

That's sad. He wasn't my all-time favorite (still reserved for Dick Enberg), but a good one.

This is terrible. Dick was a real class act. With his passing we can say good bye to the days of sports journalists who do not say "BooYah!".

He was really good.I was a fan.He will be sorely missed on sunday mornings in my house.Rest in Peace.

Hip replacement surgery complications????? Good grief. Someone posted something here not long ago about people dying in this type of surgery - or was it knee replacement surgery?
This is very sad. Condolences to his family and friends.
To: BigMacGOP
What a shame. Just goes to show you, when your number is up, it is up. Prayers for his family.

Just heard that on FOX NEWS Channel breaking news. . .he was 67 years old.
To: BigMacGOP
That is too bad. He was only 67. I thought he was quite a bit older than that. And of all things, from a hip replacement surgery. Hard to believe really. My prayers to his family and friends.

I believe the spelling is "Schaap". His son Jeremy also works for ESPN (part of the nepotism craze in sports journalism). He was a decent enough reporter. Sorry way to go and an awful time of year too.

Very, very sad news. Among his greatest achievements is his rearing, apparently, a talented and good son.
Shaap has one of my favorite anecdotes. He reports that, when he was a Soph at Syracuse and a reporter for the school newspaper, he attended a lacrosse game. Jim Brown started for the team, having been banned from football because of his race. Shaap, observing the scene on the lacrosse field, exclaimed, "And they gave him a stick!!??~!!"

ESPN Radio reporting that reporter Dick Shaap has died from complications after hip replacement surgery....nothing follows.Isn't this the 3rd or 4th death due to hip surgery in about a month?

Depending on timing after surgery, this was probably a pulmonary embolus....clot to lung.
To: carenot
I'll tell you, I know of at least two people personally who have died from knee replacement surgery and hip replacement is just as (if not more) complicated. Usually you have blood clotting problems, infections and stress....No one should get one of these until they have all of the facts....

Brings back memories of "Sport" magazine back in the late 50's and early 60's - Schaap, Cosell's "Speaking of Sports" column, Neil Leifer, Dick Young, George Vecsey, et al.

That's how old my dad was when he died. It's too young... Yes it is. My Mom passed away this past January @ 69.5 yrs. I thought that was too young too. . .

Jim Brown started for the team, having been banned from football because of his race. Duh, I don't think so. Jim Brown was an All American in college football as well as lacrosse. Lacrosse is a spring sport.
