A few memorable quotes of 2001

Somehow we’ve managed to stumble through this most unforgettable of years. Here, in no particular order, are quotations I found interesting.

Actor/singer Richard Harris showed up this year in the Harry Potter movie. Some may not recall Mr. Harris’ singing career, but he did in fact rack up a huge hit in 1968 with "MacArthur Park." This was a genuine accomplishment because there were at least two strikes against it from the start. The first was the song’s lyrics made no sense – "MacArthur Park is melting in the dark, All the sweet, green icing flowing down. Someone left the cake out in the rain..." The second is Mr. Harris couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. But, hey, that was the 60s.

He’s been mostly an actor ever since and said this about others in his profession:

"They’d go to the opening of an envelope. Any big occasion, they’re always there. Anything for exposure. We can do without them. What I hate about our business today is the elitism. So-called stars ride in private jets and have bodyguards and dietitians and beauticians. Tom Cruise is a midget and he has eight bodyguards, all 6ft 10, which makes him even more diminutive. It’s an absolute joke. Actors are unimportant."

They must love that guy on the set.

Pundit Chris Matthews talked this year about New York’s senator and her yearning to be president:

" . . . Hillary is dyin’ for it. But she's also miserable right now because of all this patriotic stuff going on - she can't stand it."

Yes, all that patriotic stuff can be such a drag, particularly if you’re the world’s smartest woman.

The New York Times didn’t abandon Hillary’s hubby in 2001. Indeed, the newspaper figured out that the vast right wing conspiracy used its incredible influence to actually compel Mr. Clinton lie. From the Times’ review of "One Scandalous Story" by Marvin Kalb:

"Kalb painstakingly documents the plot to ensnare President Clinton, forcing him to commit perjury in an attempt to drive him out of office."

Not that the self-styled paper of record would ever permit bias in its coverage, as evidenced by this from the obituary of a Sept. 11th attack victim:

"Edward C. Murphy’s life brimmed with contrasts and deep loyalties. He was a staunch Republican who invested in real estate and racehorses. But he also helped non-profit groups raise money for food and clothing for poor children."

See, staunch Republicans aren’t expected to exhibit any compassion for the less fortunate. They devote their time to making presidents lie under oath.

This is far different from staunch Democrats, who love, love, love everyone, even their political opponents. A demonstration of this came in July at the NAACP’s convention when chairman Julian Bond spoke of President Bush:

"He has selected nominees from the Taliban wing of American politics, appeased the wretched appetites of the extreme right wing, and chosen cabinet officials whose devotion to the confederacy is nearly canine in its uncritical affection." Love, love, love.

Not so loving is David Horowitz, regularly seen on cable news programs. A former radical leftist, he’s seen the light and is now a conservative. This year he made a special appeal:

"I would like to end this note with a personal request to my conservative comrades-in-arms. When you go into your next battle with our opponents, would you please stop referring to leftists who despise America, who have waged a forty-year war against its foundations, whose agendas are to build a socialist and even fascist utopia (redistribution by racial preferences) as ‘liberals.’ These are not liberals. They are leftists. The only thing they are liberal about is hard drugs and sex. In every other respect they want to control your lives."

Jihad Johnny Walker’s father told Larry King of how he’d like to welcome his son back to the country Junior despises so:

"We want to give him a big hug and (maybe) a little kick in the butt for not telling me what he was up to... "

Yes, fans, there’s surely a reason that California is known as Granola Land, the territory of fruits, flakes, and nuts.

Mr. Arat Nasemovich Bakhitov, unlike young Walker, didn’t help the Taliban. He was a prisoner for almost two years in one of their prisons. Finally released, his joy was understandable:

"Everybody was doing their tradition dances. Me? I don’t know those dances so I did hip-hop and - how you say? - break dance?"

As we break dance into the New Year, let’s pray the wicked bin Laden and all his comrades are brought to justice in 2002.

I liked MacArthur Park, too, but not by Harris. By Waylon Jennings.

Yes, I think it shows remarkable insight for a guy who worked for Carter and the Tipster.

I was referring to Matthews, who worked for Mr. Jimmy. In '76 I was involved with the Reagan campaign, and so disgusted with Ford that I voted - write in, of course - for a ticket of Ronald Reagan and Jesse Helms. Talk about a Dream Team!

I though MacArthur park was brilliant. That doesn't mean I take Harris's word on politics or brains surgery. Entertainment skills is a capacity that some people have and may be unrelated to other capacities.
