MARCH ON WASHINGTON AGAINST WAR & RACISM!

Mass Mobilization: SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 2002
(preceded by a week of mass actions)

Tell President Bush:

WE DEMAND MONEY FOR JOBS AND EDUCATION NOT WAR!
STOP THE RACIST ATTACKS!
DEFEND CIVIL LIBERTIES AND CIVIL RIGHTS!

The U.S. corporate and banking establishment seeks to maintain U.S. domination throughout the globe for their own benefit. It is these corporate and banking elites who profit from the exploitation of oil and natural gas resources in the Middle East and South Asia, from bloated military contracts and from Bush administration bailouts and tax breaks. With skyrocketing unemployment, evictions, foreclosures, and slashing of welfare and healthcare benefits at home, people in the U.S. need billions to create jobs, improve our schools, and provide quality health care. Instead the Bush administration is spending billions on bombing civilians and military aggression.

Record layoffs continue and the U.S. government’s response is billions of dollars in bailouts to corporations and insurance companies while cuts in social programs continue. The immediate response of the Bush administration after September 11 was a $15 billion package for major airlines, while they have refused to increase unemployment insurance for 100,000 travel industry employees and 400,000 workers in other sectors who lost their jobs. The Bush-proposed $100 billion “economic stimulus package” that is under consideration would not only repeal the corporate minimum tax, but would refund to the big corporations of the U.S. fourteen years of taxes, and would provide more permanent tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals.

As the U.S. bombing of Afghanistan continues and that country lies in ruins, the Bush administration is preparing to widen its war against other countries. Many in the Bush administration would like to greatly intensify their 11-year-long war against Iraq. Eleven years of U.S.-led UN sanctions and bombing of Iraq have already left over 1.5 million Iraqis dead and many more ill and malnourished.

Other countries targeted for possible attack include Somalia, Sudan, Indonesia, Yemen, North Korea and Cuba. The U.S. is intensifying their aid to countries such as Colombia and the Philippines who are attempting to suppress people’s struggles. At this moment, the U.S. is using Plan Colombia as a wedge to intensify its intervention, threatening a Vietnam-type war in Latin America. The U.S. continues to give billions in aid and political support to the Israeli government, which is nearly universally condemned for its brutal oppression of the Palestinian people. There can be no lasting peace in the Middle East until the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and a homeland are secured.

As the war abroad threatens to expand, the war at home against Arab, Muslim, South Asian and all working people continues. So-called “anti-terrorism” legislation has legitimized and legalized racial profiling as more than 5,000 young Arab men have become the targets of FBI investigation, over 1,200 people have been detained and college administrations have been asked by the FBI to turn over names and records of Arab, Muslim and international students. Bush and Ashcroft are reorganizing federal law enforcement into a domestic surveillance police state that gives the government license to listen to the public's phone calls, read the public's e-mail, execute covert searches, and target political and religious groups.

On SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 2002, tens of thousands of peace activists, workers, students, labor unionists, and others will converge in Washington, DC for a massive march on the White House to say:

MONEY FOR JOBS AND EDUCATION NOT WAR!
STOP THE RACIST ATTACKS!
DEFEND CIVIL LIBERTIES AND CIVIL RIGHTS!

*The April 27 national march on Washington against racism and war will be the conclusion of a week of mass actions. We call on people to join the National Colombia Mobilization April 19-22 (http://www.soaw.org/colombiaMobilization.html).*

International A.N.S.W.E.R. Act Now to Stop War & End Racism - is a coalition that was formed in response to the headlong rush to war and racist attacks following the horrific events of September 11. A.N.S.W.E.R. has the support participation of more than 500 organizations and prominent individuals and has scores of organizing centers across the U.S. and around the world.

We faced them down and shamed these traitors in September - now who join us in April? We have more than enough time to organize to show America that these loonies do not have a monopoly on activism. Let's turn out in numbers to support our country, president and our troops. Mark your calendars.

I'll be there. Let's have a bigger turnout than we did last time when we soundly routed, defeated, and shamed these traitors. If you're anywhere within reach of DC, please come help out on this important FReep. We look forward to seeing you. Bring friends.

We must unleash the 'vaunted conservative street.'

When I find that phrase in the media, I will know we are getting somewhere.

I'll be there.

Know it is a lot to ask - but we must also concentrate on a task closer at hand - NYC on 1 February:

The International ANSWER Coalition - Act Now to Stop War and End Racism - calls for mobilizations on February 1 and 2 in New York City.

To endorse these events, contact the International ANSWER Coalition at ANSWER@afgj.org. For more information: ANSWER@afgj.org or call: New York 212-633-6646, Washington 202-543-2777, San Francisco 415-821-6545, Chicago 773-583-7728

· Declare war on unemployment, poverty and mass layoffs - not the people of the Afghanistan and the Middle East.
· Defend civil liberties.
· Money for jobs, education and health care - not war in Afghanistan and the Middle East and corporate tax cuts.

From January 31 to February 4, corporate bosses from the world's largest transnationals and political leaders will meet in New York City for their annual World Economic Forum. In past years they met in Davos, Switzerland, but massive demonstrations forced a change in venue. This year they'll be meeting at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in mid-town Manhattan. The World Economic Forum will celebrate war in Afghanistan and the Middle East, attacks on civil liberties, and corporate tax cuts. The International ANSWER Coalition calls for alternatives - jobs, health care, education, civil rights, and peace with justice - that reflect the needs of the vast majority of people. The corporate agenda wasn't welcome in Davos, and it's not welcome in New York City.

February 1:

Teach-in at Community Church, 35th between Park and Madison, starting at 9:00am

Featuring workshops on:

· War in the Middle East
· Civil liberties
· Immigrant rights
· Corporate-centered globalization
· Domestic economic policies
· Alternative visions from the progressive community

February 2

Mass rally at the World Economic Forum starting at 11:00am Park Ave., between 49th and 50th Bring signs, puppets, street theater, noise-makers, and your creativity.

· NO to war in Afghanistan and the Middle East!
· NO to corporate-centered globalization!
· YES to jobs, education, health care, and civil rights!

Since September 11, hundreds of thousands of workers from the travel industry, hotels, restaurants, and others have lost their jobs. Unemployment and mass layoffs are sweeping through all sectors of the world economy. Politicians, working for the interests of corporate elites, are providing billions of dollars in bailouts for investors and transnational corporations, but not a penny for increased unemployment insurance. The Congressional "economic stimulus" plan offers huge corporate tax cuts, but only pennies for working people. The lowest paid workers, especially immigrants and service sector workers, are suffering the repercussions of 9-11, while the rich get richer.

Immigrants and those who are struggling against the corporate agenda are in for a double whammy, as Attorney General Ashcroft curtails basic civil liberties and constitutional rights. Today the attacks are against immigrants - incarceration without charges and racial profiling. Tomorrow the target will be US citizens as Ashcroft pushes to legalize surveillance of religious and political groups.

Internationally, the Bush administration wages war in Afghanistan and encourages expanded war in Palestinian territories. Now Bush is preparing the public for prolonged war in Iraq and perhaps other nations. The deaths of thousands of civilians in the Middle East, both from direct military action and the resulting refugee crisis, is nothing short of state-sponsored terrorism. This is not the way to find justice for 3,000 civilians who died on September 11. And this is not the way to build a more secure and stable world.

We must respond to increasing attacks on our well-being by corporate-dominated politicians that bring us war, layoffs and increased poverty. At the same time as the ANSWER events in New York City, the World Social Forum will gather tens of thousands of representatives from every corner of the world in Porto Alegre, Brazil, to discuss alternative visions. The events in New York and Porto Alegre will mark a new plateau in the people's capacity to organize, to reject old classist models, and to build a better world.

My sister lives in midtown Manhattan. I'll try to make 2/2 at least. And I urge all our NY, NJ, Pa., and other FReepers to make every effort to get to these events. Both are within reasonable driving distance. Let's have so much red, white, and blue out there that these ANSWER Commies just disappear!

My take on these guys and opinion from an earlier thread:

...we need to be ever vigilant - countering the forces of evil both foreign and domestic on every corner. They are the so-called "peaceniks" and "pacifists" - the hard-core (lingering communists and anarchists - and the naive sheep that dance to their song). They are like a cancer - eating away at the very foundation of our great country. It is beyond trying to reason with these traitors. They have made their bed and now they will have to sleep in it. No quarter is given, nor requested. This is war and the traitors must be held accountable. - within all legal bounds.

This may sound harsh, but it has been my experience that the vast majorities on FR are compassionate and caring towards their fellow citizens and their country. The bottom line here is that the forces of evil have attacked our families and loved ones - for that no compassion, caring nor quarter shall be granted, nor requested from their lowly ranks. They have crossed the line from which there is no return.
