Scientist's anthrax claim was bogus
Milwaulkee Journal Sentinel ^ | October 4, 2001 | GRETCHEN SCHULDT

Posted on 12/19/2001 4:38:50 PM PST by Clinton's a rapist

A week after the terrorist attacks on America, a highly educated scientist told Milwaukee police that he was building an anthrax delivery system in his basement, according to documents filed in federal court.

In these times of heightened alert, the remark earned the man a visit from FBI agents armed with a search warrant, who took the man's computer, and keypads from a telephone and a microwave oven, according to court records. But no deadly anthrax.

As it turns out, police were responding to a neighbor dispute, and the man was intoxicated when he made the anthrax comments to police.

FBI spokeswoman Cathy Fahey said no further investigation is planned and the man, whose resume says he has a doctorate in nuclear and environmental chemistry, is not likely to be charged.

The affidavit says the man apparently was intoxicated when he made the anthrax statement to police just days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks left the nation with heightened vigilance against potential biological or chemical threats.

About 200 pounds of anthrax spores released upwind of Washington, D.C., could kill up to 3 million people, according to a government study.

Police were summoned to the man's west side home Sept. 18 by his mother, who feared he would get into a physical confrontation with a neighbor over damage her son allegedly did with a lawn mower to the neighbor's property.

The woman "indicated that her son was usually not violent, but had recently developed an alcohol problem and is unable to control his temper after drinking," according to the affidavit by FBI Special Agent Parker Shipley.

The affidavit was filed last week in support of a request for a search warrant. The search was conducted Friday.

The affidavit says the man told officers he had worked for subcontractors of the U.S. Departments of Defense and Energy as a senior research scientist.

His resume, which he provided to the officers, "indicates that his specialty is in the areas of radio chemistry, military ordnance and munitions, and decontamination," the affidavit says.

The man's employment history was verified with a former employer, the Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio. He was fired twice - in 1996 and 1999 - from his job there as a senior research scientist, according to the affidavit and the man's resume, which also was filed in court.

Battelle "had reason" to search the man's home after he was fired the second time, the affidavit says.

The searchers found chemicals that were not illegal to possess, but an informant told the FBI that the man "has the knowledge and experience to utilize the chemicals that were found in his basement to make a lethal chemical agent," the affidavit says.

This is presumably the scientist referred to in the latest ABC News story. Note that this article is over two months old.

I wonder if he's ever been to Trenton...and I wonder if he's had a return visit from the FBI.

Could be...or it could be that this is just chaff. My guess is the latter. When they arrest this guy and release Allah Rakah, I'll be a bit more impressed.

From today's ABC report:
An estimated 200 U.S. scientists dealt with the anthrax program over the last five years and federal authorities have told ABCNEWS they are now investigating the activities of a senior research scientist who was twice fired from Battelle and allegedly made a threat to use anthrax in the days after Sept. 11.

According to an FBI affidavit, agents searched the home of one former top Battelle scientist in late September after he allegedly made threats about using anthrax. Agents said they found suspicious chemicals but no anthrax, according to the sources.

As Joe Lockjaw would say, "this is old news." Time to "move on."

Anybody want to take a crack at figuring out who this guy is? Plenty to go on in this article. Be the first to name the anthrax perp. He must be the anthrax perp, right?

Interesting that this Milwaulkee-based ex-Battelle scientist should now be the FBI's top suspect, if we are to believe ABC News. This article is dated October 4. The anthrax letter sent to Daschle was post-marked in Trenton, NJ, on October 9. Makes sense, right?

This must be the man they're talking about in the other story (since all the particulars match in detail), but he's very unlikely to be the anthrax mailer because the dates aren't right.

The article says he was interviewed by the Milwaukee police on Sept. 18, apparently in Milwaukee. That is the postmark date of the letters to the NY Post and Tom Brokaw, postmarked Trenton, NJ. These letters were not mailed from Milwaukee (in addition to the postmark evidence, note that there's no trail of anthrax spores or anthrax infections in Milwaukee).

Sept. 18 was a Tuesday, so the letters were presumably mailed either on Tuesday itself or after the last pick-up time on Monday. Unless this scientist had just returned to Milwaukee from out of town either on Sept. 18 or late on Sept. 17, this just doesn't make sense.

Interesting that they should recycle this old red herring and turn it into the centerpiece of the lastest FBI spin. Guess they forgot that there are people out here who know how to use Google. (Incidentally, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story is the only report that turned up, so this one was almost down the memory hole.) If you read the ABC News story without knowing the background, you would really think they were onto something. Oh, well...

U.S. newsies really, really wants the anthrax mailer to be someone from this country. It's pitiful that ABC would rehash a two month old story and call it "exclusive."

Has anyone done a handwriting (or rather printing) comparison
between the hijackers (Atta especially)
and the mailed letters and envelopes?

I have heard NOTHING about such a comparison.
But obviously it has been done.

I seem to recall there were some photographs of Atta's diaries.
Does anyone have them or a link to them?

I'm not aware of any published photographs of Atta's diary. I agree that he is the person most likely to have written the anthrax letters. The business with him seeking treatment for reddened hands would support that hypothesis.
