In Dante's Inferno, the circle of hell in which the noble pagans took residence was lit by the light of their own reason. They were not particularly tormented (their existence pre-dated Christ), but their light only shone so far into the darkness.

None of us are as bright as we think we are.

Seriously - we've gone in a mere 10,000 years from a non-writing Stone Age primitive to a species that has mapped the subatomic, measured the universe, inferred the quantum, launched interplanetary and interstellar probes, is planning intra-stellar colonization and is cracking the very genetic code of life itself.

Not too shabby, wouldn't you say?

Thus spoke the chief of the rebel angels.

We're very good at amusing ourselves. I've a friend who holds about 35 different patents. He's an expert in the field of microprocessor technology and has invented items that allow our conversation via computer to take place as quickly as it does.

He's told me on a number of occasions that what we think of logic or illogic are in actuality human inventions. He claims that true logic is that which God wills. He also claims that he's relied on God's logic, not his own, when coming up with new ideas for inventions.
