I'm reminded of Bill Slim (the British commander in Burma and the only Brit in WWII worth his salt.) On the retreat from Burma, after a terrible overnight disaster, he was greeted by his staff.

"Every general knows the look. They have no idea what to do and are looking to you for leadership. You don't know what to do either but you know that you have to give it to them. There is no one for you to turn to, no one for you to fall back upon."
