OBL is in Pakistan! No, he's in Tora Bora! A Peek at Media Wishful Thinking
by JohnHuang2 December 13, 2001 |
The presstitutes were swept away by a bulletin report posted on the Christian Science Monitor website yesterday, alleging the world's most wanted man flew the coop more than a week ago into neighboring Pakistan.
Judy Woodruff, staggering and heartsick from weeks of gloomy news out of Afghanistan, bubbled with ecstasy as she recited the dispatch on CNN -- word-for-word. MSNBC was prancing and doing cartwheels over the 'late breaking development.'
Still doubt the media is rooting for the bad guys? The gloating and crowing on display yesterday will have removed it. In the case for media bias, the spectacle qualified as exhibit *A*.
So who was the source for this 'bombshell' -- whom did the Christian Science Monitor cite as their 'star witness' to this earthshaking new twist?
Are you ready for this? A senior ranking al-Qaeda operative! Yep, you heard it right, folks. Abu Jaffar, described in the "report" as a "religious scholar" and "Saudi financier," claims that his boss, with the assistance of Ghilzi tribesmen, hightailed into Pakistan a whopping ten days ago.
He further told the newspaper that "Osama Bin Laden traveled out of Tora Bora two times in this Ramadan holy month," supposedly meeting in Kandahar with Mullah Omar, the Taliban's "Supreme leader," three weeks ago.
Oh, but there's more, you see. According to Jaffar, his boss and he are so chummy, chummy that Osama, as a token of his 'friendship,' dispatched his 19-year-old son Salah Uddin back to Tora Bora under a hailstorm of bombs just "to be with us there."
What a tear-jerker, eh?
Yeah, right.
To illustrate the utter absurdity of this tale, imagine the FBI accepting -- with no corroborating evidence, in a 'on-the-record' newspaper interview -- the word of a *senior* member of La Cosa Nostra crime syndicate ID-ing the new whereabouts of his fugitive boss. Even fingering the co-conspirators who aided his alleged escape!
Talk about grasping at straws.
It never occurs to the Bush-hating press that their 'star witness' might have an ulterior motive for coming out now; That Jaffar may well be feeding them clever BS in a bid to misdirect Bin Laden's pursuers and bring the bombing over Tora Bora to a halt. A two-fer.
Oh, and never mind that their vaunted "source" had another, personal reason to lie: A cluster bomb blew off his foot during the bombing at Tora Bora.
Regarding Bin Laden's mobility, bear in mind the following: 1) the huge bounty on his head, 2) the need to surround himself with his very own praetorian guard to shield him from bounty hunters, 3) Osama Bin Laden is Arab 4) Pakistan is not. Among the Pashtun tribes of northwest Pakistan, a 6'4" Arab national with a $25 million dollar bounty on his head sticks out like a sore thumb.
And, speaking of motives, what prompted the "respected" Christian Science Monitor to risk its "reputation" by publishing this nonsense?
Judging from the timing, I have a sneaking suspicion it might have something to do with Tuesday's ABCNEWS bombshell -- a real one this time. The TV network, quoting American intelligence sources, disclosed that U.S. military personnel intercepted a series of satellite-phone and radio communications among panicked al-Qaeda terrorists in Tora Bora just after a 'Daisy Cutter' bomb was dropped. The calls placed the terrorist mastermind in the immediate vicinity.
The bottom line is this: The press is anguished over the smashing success of this war thus far. They yearn for failure. Their predictions of another Vietnam-style fiasco or debacle have been thoroughly discredited. They crave for something -- anything -- by which to declare this mission a flop. This is why they fantasize Osama Bin Laden skipping into Pakistan.
Memo to Media: Just keep on dreaming.

An outstanding post, John, thank you. Three major centers of extreme left remain entrenched in the US -- Hollywood, the Media and Universities. They mourn the passing of their star -- X42. They yearn for the return of Al Gore (complete with his new beard -- Mullah Ali'Gore-ah?). And they feed us guilt, anti-Americanism and socialism/communism disguised as "pity for the downtrodden." TV is terrible -- even their fantasies on politics are grotesque (West Wing = Left Wing, Left Coast, Left Out). The Left cannot face the underlying reality of this war -- Islam is rarely a peaceful religion -- ISLAM, THE RELIGION THAT LOVES TO HATE.

The hunt for Mr. bin Laden has drawn increasing numbers of allied commandos to the mountains of eastern Afghanistan, more than 100 in all, including specialized Army and Navy teams, military officials said. I am so glad they use "Mr" when talking about bin Ladin

Excellent laundry list there, JoeEveryman! It speaks to the value of the target they are taking out - with that much power in such a small area, it must be bin Laden!

Kind of like the end to most James Bond movies. Just as long as Osama does not escape like some of the Bond villains for the next episode:
"Return to Somalia", "Saddam's Last Stand", "Strike on Sudan", "Yuletide in Yemen"
"The Indonesian Incident", "Bombs over Beirut",
"K is for Kalishnikovs, Kashmir, and KILL", "Bedtime for Bosnia", "Terror in Tehran"
"The Philippine Factor", "West Bank Warriors", "Getting Serious in Syria", "Lybia is for Losers", "Gaza - Gone-za", "Problems in Pakistan"
Ian Flemming would have had loads to work with in today's world!
