Wife of Flight 93 Hero Gets Cold Shoulder from 9/11 Charities

Three months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the wife of Flight 93 hero Jeremy Glick is struggling to make ends meet, since an array of charities created to help 9/11 victims have given her the brush off because of a technicality.

Lyzabeth Glick tells the New York Daily News that the national United Way hasn't been much help, telling her recently, "(your husband) was not in the World Trade Center, we're not giving you any funds."

The Federal Emergency Management Agency also gave Mrs. Glick and her two children the cold shoulder, explaining, "We're not giving any money to Flight 93 victims."

Even a promise from singer Kristy Jackson, who recorded "Little Did She Know" as a tribute to Jeremy Glick with an eye towards donating the proceeds to victims' families, hasn't panned out. Mrs. Glick says she has yet to see a cent from the song.

She, her young daughter and five-month-old son were at the White House Tuesday to commemorate the three month anniversary of the attacks, where they heard President Bush honoring the husband and father as "one of the heroes of Sept. 11" whose "courage may have saved the White House" when he and fellow Flight 93 passengers foiled the plans of the kamikaze hijackers at the cost of their own lives.

But her husband's hero status hasn't meant much in terms getting some of the money donated to 9/11 victims. After collecting a mere $5,000 from her local United Way and $25,000 from the Red Cross, she's now all tapped out.

With charity after charity giving Mrs. Glick the runaround, she now hopes to find a teaching job to keep the bank from foreclosing on her home.

Here are a couple of sites set up already. When Lisa Beamer took that plane trip to SF a few month's ago on the same doomed route, a lesser publicized fact was that she was meeting with Oracle to set up:

The Todd M. Beamer Foundation

Also, look at: Flight 93 Memorial

Sod the UW and RC; they'll never get a nickle from me again

And why is his wife "tapped out" after three months when she received $30,000?

If you take about five thousand Sept. 11 victims and multiply by $30,000 each, you get $150 million total. Isn't that about right for the amount of money collected?

This is why i didn't contriute a dime to any charity after the attacks. After being pressured EVERY YEAR while I was working for a big corporation to contribute to the United Way, and then finding out how much the "management" of these charities makes, I said forget it. I prefer to donate to LOCAL charities. This doesn't surprise me at all, and O'reilly is right to go after the big charities. How much interest have these charities made from this cash just sitting? That could pay for some great corporate perks, hmmm?

Depending on whether you're a Christian or not, the Salvation Army is a great charity. Its top leadership receives a salary no higher than the average working American, yet it's the most efficiently run charity in America. Probably those two facts are related. In the future, perhaps even secular charities will come under scrutiny by their contributors, and their leaders will be required to live modestly. Sometimes, by paying more, you get less.

It's nothing personal, I just call it like I see it. Do please read "A Christmas Carol" this Christmas season.

IMO, these people didn't take care of their families...

And might this have anything to do with Big Government's promise to be there to take care of the family via Social Security, welfare, or child support? When you subsidize irresponsible behavior, expect to see more of it.

I agree that the charities' behaviour is outrageous... however there was no body, hence no casket, no funeral expenses.....and this woman has received thousands of dollars and the money is all gone. I am not defending the charities in any way....and I am not begrudging her any money she receives..however, at some point she is going to have to learn to handle money responsibly. Now is the time.

sounds reasonable to me.....the charities collected far more than that but they are NOT distributing all the funds to the victims....so I also agree with everyone who is ranting against the charities.

If Jeremy Glick had been killed crossing the street on his way to the airport by a hit and run driver, what would have happened? That's the kind of event we are ALL supposed to plan ahead for. She IS eligible for social security death benefits, she is eligible for life insurance assuming that the companies have indeed agreed not to enforce the act of war provisions; and I would be shocked if she had no other assets upon which to draw. The charities owe her just as they owe all other victims and it's an outrage if this story is true--but the people who gave to those funds gave expecting there to be as many as 10,000 victims and probably expecting subsequent attacks. I want to see the kids provided for, but I have a bad taste in my mouth for giving yuppies a free ride to easy street because they lost a loved one; all of us have lost loved ones, and nobody ever tried to make it up to us financially. (You can't, anyway.)

If she can't live within her means in New Jersey, there are many places that would be honored to have the children of Jeremy Glick in residence. She can have one heck of a nice house here in Oklahoma for probably 25% of what it costs her there.

"Maybe the United Way and the Red Cross should be boycotted until they die, and some new charities could take over their functions."
Not MAYBE, Mr.McGowan.....ABSOLUTELY!!,

All good points. Something else that hasn't been mentioned in this thread is that educational funds have been set up for all the children of the victims. Nothing can replace her husband and the children's father. But finances are not this lady's main problem.

Maybe this is why this whole thing offends us. It's the ultimate end of our victim-culture. "I lost something, and someone is at fault, so support me for life." Losing and earning are NOT THE SAME THING.

It is a question of whether the families EARNED anything. It's the fact that people donated to charities for a specific purpose, and the charities kept the money for their own "worthwhile" purposes. I noted that when Bernardine Healy was on O'Reilly, she dodged the question of fraud repeatedly. She simply refused to acknowledge that people GAVE the money for the FAMILIES, and kept going on and on about how wonderful the programs were that the Red Cross was diverting the money to.

I'm now down to one charity I give my money to, the Salvation Army.

I would gladly give to a fund to The Widow Glick and Beamer.

The Salvation Army is good. Personally, though, I prefer that 100% of my donation go to the intended receipient. I am sure the Salvation Army does things I can not do - like giving people jobs.

Me, I just give them cash, sometimes I buy them a meal at McDonalds.

UVA WORKERS GIVE $550,433 TO CVC From the Daily Progress / Region briefs University of Virginia employees donated $550,433 to the 2001 Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign - the highest amount collected by any state agency. The Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign is a charity drive conducted each fall at state agencies. Employees can contribute to charities of their choice. More than 3,150 UVa employees gave their time and money to a variety of charities, officials said. (Not online) ......... I believe this is the United Way in sheeps clothing....I know for a fact from working with UW that ANY contribution designated for a particular group is FIRST deducted from that group so the net from your designation is ZERO ...this is absolutely a fact....please copy this and put it somewhere it can be read by FR
