The U. S. government released today a copy of a videotape of Osama bin Laden obtained by U.S. forces in Jalalabad, Afghanistan in late November.

The video was filmed by unknown persons.

"There was no doubt of bin Laden's responsibility for the September 11 attacks before the tape was discovered," said Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld.

The release of the tape was made after balancing the concerns about any additional pain that could be caused by its release against the value of having the world fully appreciate what we are up against in the war against terrorism.

The tape was released with an English translation and English subtitling, prepared independently by George Michael, translator, Diplomatic Language Services; and Dr. Kassem M. Wahba, Arabic language program coordinator, School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University. They collaborated on their translation and compared it with translations done by the U.S. government for consistency. There were no inconsistencies in the translations.

Officials said they found the videotape in a private residence in Jalalabad. During the 40-minute recording, bin Laden indicates he knew for several days that September 11 would be the date of the attacks. He also said that he had turned on his radio in advance to listen to coverage of the attacks and that he had underestimated the damage that would be inflicted on the World Trade Center.

Release of the tape, dated November 9 and made in Kandahar, Afghanistan, was hotly debated within the White House as officials weighed concerns about protecting U.S. intelligence sources with building the public case against bin Laden.

Before the release of the tape, an Egyptian reporter was making excuses, and others were saying it is doctored digitally by the US. "We've seen their movies and know what they can do" was a sort of quote that was being thrown about. There are those who will never believe and there are those who know the truth and will continue to speak lies.

I see what you're saying. I'm looking at it strictly from a mass-media perspective. They put this out there for the whole world to see. I have no idea why they released it, but it does help their cause, whether or not that was their intent.

IMHO, in order to leave Afghanistan (and subsequently invade another country), support would need to be strong. Support not only from American citizens, but the "Western world" at large.

We really do need a military tribunal. Otherwise, some Clintonized jury is going to ask itself "depends on what the meaning of 'in advance' is."

Not only that, but our court system, perverted by modern liberals, will push to disallow the evidence as obtained illegally. Besides, how can any of these monsters get a fair trial here? Let the military deal with them. I heard an interesting fact a couple of days ago. The liberals are insisting that if the military handles the trials, all perps will be found guilty. However, after WWII, military tribunals only convicted 85% of those brought before them.

That said, after reading the transcript, I can't say that he was, himself, behind the attacks on 9/11. This didn't prove anything to me beyond the facts that he knew about the attacks in advance, that he gave advice concerning the attacks,

How can anyone interpret the term 'we calculated in advance' as not being behind the attacks?

One of the 'alleged' hijackers showed up at the American Embassy in Saudi Arabia after 911 to prove he wasn't on the planes. He is currently flying for a Saudi airlines.
