A 51-year-old woman whose friends say had been depressed since her husband died in the collapse of the World Trade Center committed suicide this week, authorities said Wednesday.
Pat Flounders, 51, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at her home Monday, Monroe County Coroner Dave Thomas said. Her body was found by a friend.
Her husband, Joe Flounders, 46, was worked for Euro Brokers Inc. on the 84th floor of trade center's South Tower, the second skyscraper struck by hijackers Sept. 11.
Pat Flounders had said she was at home watching television when she saw a jet hit the North Tower. She called her husband and told him to leave, but was later told by one of her husband's colleagues that he stayed behind to assist a co-worker who went into shock.
"She was so distraught. She just lost her will to live, she lost hope," said Kelly Lewis, who helped Pat Flounders gather personal documents after her husband's death.
Flounders was also in poor health and was recovering from surgery in which she had a pacemaker implanted, Lewis said. She refused the offers of free counseling that were made to families of trade center victims.
The couple had moved to Monroe County from New York three years ago.
Pat Flounders held a memorial for her husband last week in New York, which was attended by friends and former co-workers, but she remained despondent.
Her husband's death "was just so hard for her; he was taking care of her, he took care of all the financial matters," Lewis said. "He was only a few years from retirement and they were really looking forward to it."
Well yes, but not all that many more than usual.
Apparently not!!
Yes, my son-in-law will bury his father tomorrow that took his own life last Sunday.
Actually, it's technically the same God as the Christians and the Jews. The "JCI" religions all have a common base. Don't confuse the word "Allah" with a name, it's just the Arabic word for "God." They may have an incorrect interpretation of that God, just as the Jews do, but it's still the same one their talking about.
Suicide is a horribly sad act, because it represents an utter loss of hope. What is so tragic is that the number one cause of suicide is untreated depression. A cycle of hopelessness, from which it seems impossible to escape.
I'm sure it must be hard for those who love suicide victims to come to grips and have any real peace. I know that depression is bad, because I have experienced it, and I also know that sometimes it is easy to want life to be over.
Take our advice, anyone suffering from depression or despair, or having thoughts of suicide or death: Call a hotline. Just pick up the phone and call a hotline, and don't feel bad about calling 9-11 to get connected.
Amen to that.
And may God have mercy on their souls. Or, not.

Bulls$%t !! ... No God I worship would ever condone the murder of thousands of innocent people and then pay the murderers off in virgins ....
Death to Allah and his sick twisted followers.
True, I agree with you. As I said, their interpretation is twisted, but they're drawing off the same God as the Christians and Jews.
It's the U.S. Armed Forces job to arrange the meeting!
Thank you, thank you!! That was the best thing I've heard all day.
Step away from the Kool-Aid. Please. You'll thank yourself.
Have you had a World Religions course? I did so at a Catholic university. These three religions are called the JCI religions...Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. All based on the same God. Judaism is the oldest of the three, Islam the youngest. Judaism does not recognize Jesus Christ. Islam sees Christ only as a prophet, although not as important as Mohammed (of course, since he invented the religion). A cynical person could say Mohammed simply cut and pasted from Judaism and Christianity to form his new religion to unite the previously polytheistic Arab tribes...Mohammed was a traveling businessman who had come into contact with Judaism and Christianity. Interestingly, Islam accepts that Jesus was born to the Virgin Mary, and accepts therefore his mystical birth, while holding that Mohammed was born of natural parents, yet they elevate Mohammed as a higher prophet than Christ...interesting contradiction.
I guess the pain and suffering goes on.
