LaGuardia would probably have to shut down permanently if they tried that here in "Fun City"...

69?
Sounds like BYU's football team isn't going to ANY bowl this year.

Why don't they start with Miami or Orlando? Too big, too many.

Salt Lake City airport is the first airport in the country for this type security sweep.
Similar tough background checks for ALL workers in and around the port areas of
Los Angeles is being contemplated.
And the unions are really b-tching about it. Probably afraid of losing too much
of their leadership structure.
(As for the lowly union guy who might get pinched in these sort of sweeps
for an old, relatively minor offense...that person I might have some sympathy for.)

It was called "Operation Safe Travel" and was aimed at every employee at SLC airport, janitors, aircraft fuelers, food service.
It was done under the umbrella of Homeland Security but you can bet it is because of the Olympics.

Go, Mormons! Give 'em hell! For victory & freedom!!!

Salt Lake City sounds a LOT smarter then our airport officials here in Raleigh. Not only do they still have those of middle eastern descent working there but they have hired them since 9-11 and then they robbed the place.
See the thread here.

We flew into and out of SLC first week of October, with a suitcase full of laptop and base, power inverter, cd's, 2 digital cameras and accessories, hubby's shaver, 2 cell phones, etc. - and was never asked to turn anything on! At LAX everything was inspected, and we even had a bomb alert in LAX in baggage claim that delayed our baggage pick up. I'd say SLC airport was definitely lacking in their inspections!

Most port cities seem to have 50-80% people who don't meet all the rules to work at an AP. If this procedure is rolled rapidly across the country there will be real chaos.

An employees union for the workers at SFO(San Francisco) has filed a pre-emptive lawsuit to prevent background investigations of SFO workers.

If they do this at LAX there will be a hell of alot of job openings.

Good job. Hope the trend catches on in other airports. The ACLU will probably find a reason to sue.
