I agree the federal reserve is a counterproductive creation of that communist Woodrow Wilson but the reason this country slides towards bigger government is as follows a) whenever their is an international crisis( like now) the leftist exact a huge domestic expansion of socialistic programs as their price for cooperation against the enemy b) since 1920 women can vote and they always vote for economic security over freedom.
