Terry McAuliffe: 'I'm on a Mexican Radio'
DNC ^ | Dec 8, 2001 | Me llamo Terry McAuliffe

DNC Chairman, Terry McAuliffe Delivers the Spanish Radio Address' Democratic Response:

Good morning, this is Terry McAuliffe, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

As this year's holiday shopping season begins, many Americans are finding that they have less to give to friends and family. According to the most recent numbers, close to 8 million of our people are out of work, and nearly three quarters of a million have lost their jobs since the September 11th attack on our country.

The Latino community is bearing the brunt of this economic downturn, which a panel of respected economists have confirmed to be a recession. According to the most recent statistics, Latino unemployment has increased considerably since September 11th, more than the national average -- that's because Latinos are more likely to be the first ones to suffer the negative effects of a downturn in the economy.

In places like Nevada, New York, California and Florida for example -- where tourism plays an important role in the local economy, the effects have been devastating. In the aftermath of this fall's tragedy, fewer people are traveling, leading to countless lay-offs at hotels, restaurants and other hospitality-related industries.

But Republicans in Congress are not doing enough to help those most affected by this recession. Democrats in Congress have been working hard to provide some relief for working families. They have put forth a responsible economic recovery plan that helps those families hurting the most, those who are most likely to spend new money that will jumpstart the economy.

The Democratic plan addresses people's hardships head-on. It extends unemployment benefits, provides health care assistance and invests in small businesses, without compromising the nation's long-term fiscal stability.

Instead of putting forth a plan that creates jobs, promotes consumer spending and helps those that need it most, Republicans continue to pursue a policy that rewards their most generous financial supporters, while leaving behind the hard-working families of this country. In fact, Congressional Republicans wouldn't even let the Democratic bill come to a vote in the Senate.

Not only does the Republican economic plan lack compassion, it won't even do what it is supposed to do -- jumpstart the economy, creating jobs and boosting consumer spending all over the country.

Last month, voters went to the polls in elections all over the country.

Overwhelmingly, they chose Democrats as their new governors, mayors, state legislators and county officials. They chose Democrats because they know they can count on our Party to defend their values, to fight for economic opportunity, affordable health care, quality schools for our children and retirement security for our parents.

Given this strong Election Day mandate, it's critical that all Democrats continue that fight during these challenging economic times. While we are united as one nation in the war against terrorism, we Democrats will not let our political opponents take advantage of the war to advance an agenda that is hostile to working families.

This is Terry McAuliffe, Chairman of the Democratic National Party. Thank you for listening.

Marc Racicot's Response to Terry McAuliffe's response:

I feel a hot wind on my shoulder
And the touch of a world that is older
I turn the switch and check the number
I leave it on when in bed I slumber
I hear the rhythms of the music
I buy the product and never use it
I hear the talking of the DJ
Can't understand just what does he say?

I'm on a mexican radio
I'm on a mexican radio

I dial it in and tune the station
They talk about the U.S. inflation
I understand just a little
No comprende, it's a riddle

I'm on a mexican radio
I'm on a mexican radio

I wish I was in Tijuana
Eating barbequed iguana
I'd take requests on the telephone
I'm on a wavelength far from home
I feel a hot wind on my shoulder
I dial it in from south of the border
I hear the talking of the DJ
Can't understand just what does he say?

I'm on a mexican radio
I'm on a mexican radio
I'm on a mexican radio
I'm on a mexican radio

Radio radio...
What does he say ?

In fact, Congressional Republicans wouldn't even let the Democratic bill come to a vote in the Senate.

Of all the lies this is the most egregous. It is Daschle and the Democrats who refuse to bring the bill to the floor for a vote. The way to know when it is their fault, just like knowing that the opposite of what ever Bill Clinton said was true, is they immediately run to a microphone, like a kid running to mommy, and say, "Mommy, it wasn't me who did it, it was Johnny!" They are intolerable.

"Latinos are bearing the brunt of the economic slowdown" Translation = Illegals who are not Americans are losing jobs and no longer able to send 45 billion a year back to mexico. I say Great the added 45 Billion a year staying in the United States will provide a great ecnomic boost to reverse the slowdown.

Sounds to me like Demo polling could be saying things Dems are skeered of, like maybe, Hispanics are trending Republican in many places.

We've got to keep Terry McAuliffe around. He, like Jocelyn Elders in the 90's, provides great comic relief.
