If congressmen were paid commensurate with their duties and responsibilities, in line with private employment, they would be paid some millions per year. It is poor economy for taxpayers to pay them so little, what we get are men who scheme to make the office pay off in other ways -- at great expense to the taxpayers.

That's a great way to put it. Thats why a decent salary with COLAs is the way to go. I think ordinary americans are ok with that. Of course the dissenters here on this thread are something less than ordinary.
