I'm a relative newbie to posting (Mid September), but I've been lurking for well over a year. Even though I 've probably read hundreds of Free Republic Threads and participated in dozens, I've still got some basis questions if anyone is interested in providing some answers or sources...
Questions about Free Republic...
I understand "Cheese" (reference to whining, correct?) but, what about "Moose, we control all your bases" (Or, whatever the correct term is) and the reference to Ted Nugent (I know he's a Conservative)? What are the basic and literal definitions of these?
I'm sure someone has a "Glossary of Terms" for FreeRepublic.com, any links would be appreciated.
Why do some posts NOT appear at the top of the page after being responded too? (I THINK it has something to do with the assigned importance of individual catagories of posts)...I have noticed that posts like this tend to NOT go to the top but "Breaking News" posts (Which I never post) seem to appear at the top after a reply has been made.
I've recently figured-out why people "Ping" others. I did this when I started checking my "Self-Search", any other "Basics" that I might be missing?
Is this ASSUMPTION correct? It is a good idea to basically forget EVERYTHING I know about navigating other message boards because Free Republic (The way it looks and navigates) is different from most all Message Boards?
Are liberals welcome here as long as they don't spam? Or, are we interested in keeping it "Amongst ourselves" to keep things less "Flammy"?
What Message Boards out there have been started by departing Freepers? So far, I think I have identified Lucianne.com and FreeConservatives.com. Anyone want to give me the dirt as to why this happened?
Now.....A question or two about non FreeRepublic.com...
Can someone give me a source or sources to a VERY SHORT and concise history of Isreal and The Palestinians and the current (Ongoing) conflicts? How about information on BASIC Middle East strife? (Yes, I want short and basic stuff because I am too lazy to read a bunch of stuff on-line.)
What is your favorite "Resource Page"? Mine is Reference Desk (RefDesk.com). I think it's ran by Matt Drudge's father?
(Note...Being a "Computer and Internet Idiot", and KNOWING IT, I'm sure some of my following language will not be correct. Please don't bother trying to educate me, I think it's a lost cause. Just a basic answer to the basic questions will be great.)...
It's time to upgrade my computer. I've currently got a Pentium One. I think my modem is 33.6? I know it's not as good as a 56.6 or as bad as a 28.8. My limited connection speed (Modum) of 56.6 (I think) is determined by the fact that I live in the middle of Fly-Over Country and the name of my provider might as well be "Fred and Ruthy's Feed Mill and Internet Service Provider" so a cable modum is out of the question. So, besides getting the best avail modum speed, do I need to get the best computer? In other words, I am limited to a 56.6 connection, do I need to spend the money on a top of the line computer since all I basically do is surf the web with it?
As far as I can tell, this kind of post is the mother of all "Vanity Posts" and is despised above all else on FreeRepublic.com. Is that correct?
Thanks for any help. And I'm curious to see what, if anything I've done wrong by posting this as well. Please respond with the flame and/or comment on my actions, that I deserve, here -------->
:)
Oh dear...here we go again!!! Also, you haven't mentioned Lazmataz's sister, who was bitten by said moose!
This is a large thread and may take a minute depending on your system.
Got money? Go wireless uplink.
Check your motherboard, you might not be able to change the processor to make much of a difference. I would recommend a Gateway refurbished if money is tight. Many of those are new in the box, just returned from customers or closed stores.
Now...I MAY BE an idiot, but I'm not THAT dumb.
That's good info...Thanks!
One thing I found VERY interesting...
Concerning Dan Rather and "What's the Frequency Keneth"...
I am familiar with the song. And with Dan, of course. But what I NEVER knew (Or, now assume to be true) is the lore of someone beating the hell out of Rather and then saying that to him. Did this REALLY happen? And, what even surprised me a bit more is that REM wrote the song based on the suposed lore? I've never heard this. I simply assumed the song "What's the Frequency Kenneth" was just another one of their songs that I can't, or don't care to listen to close enough to fully understand.
So, am I correct? The inncident suposedly happened and then REM wrote a song about it? If so, HILARIOUS!!!
Thank you but I still don't see a definition? And how about "Moose" and refernences to Ted Nugent? Any help?
As the elephant is the symbol of the GOP, and the Dems are an ass, a drugged-up, cross dressing, athiest moose is the symbol of the Libertarian party. ;-)
or was that a picture of Harry Browne?
actually, it is a Monty Python and the Holy Grail reference
They have a kick ass DSL Service!!!

OK...So, "Moose" refers to Libertaians? Somewhat in an unflattering way...?
As for Monty Python...No references to it will help me understand anything. I can't STAND Monty Python. No offense to anyone who does...I LOVE The Simpsons!
Any help on "All your bases are belong to us"?
