I grew up in the Philly corner of PA (Delaware County) in the 60s and 70s and though my first loyalty was and is with the Phils and Birds, being Pennsy-born and bred I could take a drop of pleasure in seeing the Bucs and Steelers representing my fair state in the WS/SB frequently during the Me Decade. On the other hand it would have been fun to have experienced adolescense at Three Rivers (RIP) while weaning my ears on KDKA and Groovy QVee, instead of WIP and KYW.

I did attend a Phils-Bucs twinbill at Three Rivers on the day Pope Paul VI died in 1978 (the bulletin was flashed on the scoreboard), and another Bucs game in '89, and drove through the outskirts of Allegheny Co. on the TP on the way to Canton in '99.

BTW my neighbors are from Westmoreland County. I haven't listened for Pittsburghese in their voices. Do they talk like that in Greensburg?

If they take "shars" (as in showers), yes. Ah, Westmoreland County -- some of the BEST Italian stores EVER. The cheeses, the meats, the pastries -- the food is plastic here in Northern Virgina compared to Pennsylvania.

Most of my immediate relatives are in and around Pittsburgh (I was born in Swickley). LOVE to hear them talk...especially living here in Arkansas.

How about "windowsill"...and "get me that "hickey" over there. Then, let's go and get an "ice-krene cone" or maybe a "samwich".

The Picksburgh accent is not limited to Allegheny Cahnty. In addition to Wes'morlan' Cahnty, Eastern Ahia and the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia share its dulcet, melodic intonations, 'nat.

Woops. My apologies. I only know I've tried for almost 30 years to help my husband talk close to normal. I think he considers it his duty to God, country and his ancestors to speak Pitssburghese 'till the end of his days. Is there anyone else from Pittsburgh that says "breakTHast" instead of "breakFast?" ...drives me CRAZY!

I read these to my wife, a McKeesport native. She got a kick out of them.
When I read the 'jaggerbush' reference, she looked at me and said "Yeah?" what else are they called? LOL

One she uses all the time when playing 'tug o' war' with the dog.. "lef go".

My son lives N. of the airport in Hopewell twp., a beautiful area.

He was driving us around one day and suggested we go to Orens Donut Shop in Beaver Falls for the best donuts on the planet. I don't know how those people get out of that valley in a snowy winter. The shop was closed for the afternoon BTW.

You will find ex-Pittsburgers everywhere you go on the planet. That's because everyone gets the he** out of here as soon as they reach puberty.

Do ya remember the Magic T.L. Sound?

I was back westmoreland about 5 years ago, sure had changed. Wall to wall strip malls forever, far as eye can see. Depressing to me from an Alaskan perspective, but normal to Pittsburghers and thats ok, had lots of good times there. For a big city, Pittsburgh not all that bad.

Was that DeLaillos up along 30? Do they still have the airshows up latrobe?

They make chipped ham for me up here in alaska too, just got to teach them how.

I miss the ethnic food over the holidays too. Many people in alaska not familiar with such things.
