Free Republic Search Engine *Experimental*
Search Free Republic ^

Posted on 12/07/2001 3:41:59 PM PST by John Robinson

I've placed online an experimental search engine. It currently only searches article titles. If the technology proves worthy, I'll try to expand it to search articles and commentary. If it cooks the server, it's outta here.

It has a few interesting features, please give it a whirl.

Must be my private style sheet; FR's is running normally.

BTW, I lost the FR style sheets. Could you point me in the right direction to a text copy?

~~~ The Sailboat Escape-Pod Option ~~~
I tried various options & combinations, even more than I listed.
However, in order for the new Search Engine to be truly useful, a thread should come up by searching just one word, in this case pod. Sometimes you can only remember one word of a title.
What if I am unable to remember the phrase escape pod?
I'm sorry about that error in my previous post.
And I'm also sorry that I was not more clear in the FIRST part! ;o)
There are THREE MODES to John's search engine:
match ANY word
match ALL words
match EXACT PHRASE
escape pod - match ANY word - either escape OR pod, MANY results with "escape" but not "pod"
escape pod - match ALL words - only ONE result:
~~~ The Sailboat Escape-Pod Option ~~~

Using multiple search terms - like escape pod - with the instructions match ANY word - will generally give a BUNCH of results that you do NOT want, in addition to the result that you DO want, as was the case here.
That match ANY word search DID find your thread, plus many more. (It came up #39 out of the first 100 or so results.)

Google will let you spend HOURS sifting through HUNDREDS of garbage results looking for that "needle in a haystack" thread that you really want. It appears that John has limited the (server intensive) results listed by this new search engine to about the first hundred matches or so, so that a "brute force" method may not work every time.

IMHO, a match ALL words search is generally the best place to start, IF you remember the LEAST COMMON word that really is in the title, AND that single word has MORE THAN three-letters. (See the more complete discussion in post #108)

pod - is a three-letter word, and CANNOT be searched for by itself

escape pod - is one "work-around" that will work
sailboat pod - is another.
option pod - also works

OTHER, non-three-letter word searches that will EFFICIENTLY find your thread are:

sailboat option - works.
sailboat escape - works.
and
escape option - works, but it ALSO finds:
Depth leaves sailors few options for escape

I think I found a bug in the search. If I do a search for DRUDGE, I get a lot of messages dated

What's the deal with that?

JohnRob's new search function finds this VINTAGE post (with JimRob's name spelled WRONG!) but it lists the post date as:
Posted on 11/29/99 4:00 PM Pacific by (Unknown)
That must be when the REALLY OLD files were transferred to a newer server. Or something like that.

I am not sure why that date was chosen, the date recorded in the table is 0000-00-00 (no date) as these older threads existed prior to the database. (Fishing out the date after the fact has proven difficult.)

Hey, rintense and the "Daily Dose" gang! CHECK THIS OUT!
a day in the life - match EXACT phrase - order by post time - gives EVERY THREAD, back to August!
You can force OLDER threads into the "Top 100" by using - match ALL words - and including search terms like:
a day in the life 2/ - which finds the VERY FIRST one:
A day in the life of President Bush (photos): 2/20/01
excite.com, yahoo.com | 02/20/01

Here is a nice thread showing President Bush at his best. There will be a lot of pics so get ready for bandwidth issues! Enjoy!

John Robinson says that this new search engine is EXPERIMENTAL, and will CHANGE urls soon, so that we should NOT use this to replace the ALL PREVIOUS THREADS link in the "USO Canteen" threads - yet...

Check out:
the guild - match EXACT phrase - order by post date - which lists ALL GUILD threads, back to August
But if you include modifiers, you can force the "Top 100" results displayed to go back even FARTHER in time, i.e.:
the guild monday
or
the guild meeting - which finds:
THE GUILD'S meeting is called to order 2-5-2001 Thread #1
2-5-2001 | Free Republic Ladies' Investigative Guild

I'm Your Worst Nightmare. I am a BAD Republican. I like big cars, big cigars and naturally big racks. I believe the money I make belongs to me and my family, not some mid-level governmental functionary with a bad comb-over who wants to give it away to crack addicts squirting out babies. I don't care about appearing compassionate. I think playing with guns doesn't make you a killer. I believe its called the Boy Scouts for a reason. I think I'm better than the homeless. I am not the real Slim Shady, so I think that I’m gonna stay seated ...

The D.C. Chapter of Free Republic invites all FReepers and lurkers in good standing to join us this Saturday, September 29, in Washington, D.C. for Operation Infinite Freep.Our purpose will be to show support for our troops, President Bush, the families and victims of the recent terrorist attacks, and the United States.We will do this by acting as a counter to the so-called peacenik (in reality, anti-American) rally and march scheduled for that day in D.C.We will do so peacefully and lawfully, if you do not think you can control yourself in this trying time, please stay home. Who Organized The March for Justice?

Free Republic
October 28, 1998 Clarity

It's too early to assess the impact and success of the March for Justice. The logistics underlying the production, however, have been formidable, and many Free Republic fans and members have been heaping accolades (and some criticism, too) on the organizers. Imagine in such a short time getting permits at three venues, arranging for nationally known speakers, preparing for first aid, tents, stages, electrical power, media relations, merchandising, hotels, transportation, signage, communications, insurance, security, paperwork, and various other logistics. Who did it?

Many have helped enormously and many more will. When it's all said and done and over, a thank you list will be very long. But for now, here is the Organizing Committee that has labored like you can't believe, overcoming everthing you can imagine, even the internal tensions that are normal in any big project.

Hat's off to (in alphabetical order): A Navy Vet, BobJ, Clinton's a liar, jolly, jpress (aka Joy in DC), Mojo, and of course Jim Robinson. Hip hip hooray!

Since I was not around back then, I can only appreciate your experiences vicariously, but now ALL FReepers can, too!
