Good morning. Having a cup of hot coffee and doing some FReeping, mainly just lurking and reading and enjoying a fire in the stove and the dog snoring at my feet. Life is great!

Good morning, and a big Bump for our Heroes - now and forever.

Thank you both... Of all the many accounts I have read over the years of Pearl Harbor, I would recommend "Day of Infamy" by Walter Lord as the "one most definitive book"- it's old now, but for minute-by-minute, heart-stopping detail, it is unmatched.
America was a very insular, rural country back then- my wife's family had just gotten REA electricity, and still had a pitcher pump & outhouse.
( think that over, all you palm-pilot jockeys! A radio was leading-edge technology back then! )
America had to wake up- and grow up- really fast.
And we did.

Look out. When it gets around this time of year, especially THIS year, the world ends and begins all over again. Begging EVERYONE's pardon if the graphics are too much. It's like Italian. It'sa how I talk. I'm a Pittsaburgher, after all

PARADISE LOST

The actual telegram sent from Pearl Harbor to Washington, D.C.

Photo of atomic bomb exploding over Nagasaki (9 August 1945)

Doris Miller is credited with shooting down several Japanese planes with a machine gun from the deck of the U.S.S. West Virginia during the attack on Pearl Harbor. When news of his actions reached the public, the African-American community saw him as their symbol of patriotism and pride. They wanted him to give speeches, named Boys Clubs after him, and started a write-in campaign to have President Roosevelt admit him to the Naval Academy. Although he did not attend the Naval Academy, Miller was decorated for bravery and continued to serve on active duty. Miller lost his life in the explosions and subsequent sinking of the Liscome Bay early on the morning of November 24, 1943.
G-d bless America.

Awesome, my friend. Thanks for posting.

A day of remembrance and reflection.
I'll never forget the first time I sailed into Pearl and the ship dipped the colors...a moving tribute.
The memorial is a truly moving thing. I wonder if the oil drops which occasionally rose still do. Tiny rainbows on the water.
A very good composite pic.

I still have my Honolulu Star paper which I got at Oahu. Good to see it is up on the net.
To: Snow Bunny
I suppose it would be silly to wonder how many survivors actually died in the attack.
Hey, if we can't be silly in the middle of the night, when can we? :-)
