I do not trust Ashcroft.

Me either. The question Is : Are the troops to keep people out, or US in?

Canada was my planned escape route...

I agree that we have a real enemy which are Islamic Militants and anyone else who tries to violate "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".

Hmmm... But that would include the GOP and all those that vote for them, wouldn't it?

Sorry, I can't agree with your assessment that the Bill of Rights is being "torn up."
What about the 4th Amd. still exist? Since you can no longer express views against govt. that "may be interpreted" as "terroristic threats", where are your 1st Amd rights?
Some liberties are being temporarily curtailed -- THAT I understand.
Good luck in getting it repealed, since this "WOT" is expected to last, say forever. There may be a whole generation that grows up without these freedoms. Will there be the insistance for repeal of any of this anti Constitutional crap?
Are YOU personally affected yet, or assume to be?
The most incidious parts of the un-patriot act do not sunset. So, yes I am affected by it, so are my kids, and soon to be grandkids. Live free or die. Blackbird.

(In case anyone is interested, I suffer from amnesia after getting hit on the head by a falling pine cone some years back. I can't remember my friend, or what he looks like. We haven't been in contact in years.)

That pine cone gets around....my kids were hit by that very same one! :-)

what i think everyone fails to realize is that the LARGEST Al-Quida cell in NORTH AMERICA is in TORONTO, CA! Folks, when was the last time any of you actually WENT to Canada? I live in NY and can say with certainty that we are NOT worried about Joe and Jane Canadian coming across the border, we are worried about the MASS OF ARABS there. Sure, a lot of them are probably decent, hardworking immagrants, like a lot of the same people in the US. But what about those who aren't?

As for Mexico, yeah, that border is still a problem, but do you know how out of place Arabs are down there? The Mexican Federales (federal police) have and will continue to make life difficult for anyone they don't like, and Arabs are up there on the top of their list.

I say more Nat'l Guard at the Canadian border.

I live on the Maine/New Brunswick border. Many people commute to both sides daily for their livelihood and have done so for years. The new border restrictions and waits are impacting life in communities where the economy is already worst that the National averages of both countries. I think the priorities need change. Those commuters should be issued a pass obtained with strict background checks to provide easy access. Why punish the average citizenry for radical Islamic extremist?

Ashcroft is an honorable man.

I agree with that 100% percent.

But, he is 100% the wrong man for the job and should never have been given it. GWB's one administrative mistake.

Hey Francisco, whazzup?

You're not supposed to notice that, didn't you get the pamphlet last week?

The term of the War Powers act is almost expired, if I'm not mistaken (it was a 90 day authority, wasn't it, before Congress had to make a formal declaration), and still we have no declaration of War. Yet, ask any NeoCon why they are so quiveringly ecstatic to suspend Constitutional liberties, and they will chatter "Cuz we're at war buddy!".

Hmm, strange, I'm still waiting for the declaration. What I'm not waiting for, since the NeoCons are so eager to provide them, are closed borders, warrantless searches, secret tribunals, warrantless wiretaps and warrantless email interception. They also seem to be able to provide Federalized airport workers and a "bailout" of billions of dollars to businesses which were already failing prior to 9/11. Now what was it called, when government supported and propped up businesses, what was that system called again?

But hey, its all ok if GW does it, right? I mean, this doesn't set a precedent now, does it? Nahhh, say it ain't so.

Revenge against the terrorists? You bet! Do it hard, do it fast, and don't give them a kiss to warm up. But do it the right way, stop pretending that GW is some kind of emperor who is under no constraint to follow the Constitution. If we are at war, Congress needs to declare it, period.

To get the Canadians to stop letting in so many Arabs and to crack down on them. If we seal the borders then Chrieten will get off his PC a**. After we got more cooperation out of Canada then we'd proceed as you suggested.

The war powers act is more unconstitutional then anything Dubya has done. It infringes on the prezes authority as C&C of the armed forces.

I'm becoming increasingly concerned at the level of stupidity here on FR. For example:

"We're concerned, here in the U.S., that a large number of the 19 terrorists, involved in the attacks on 9/11, entered the U.S. from Canada"

This is of course complete and utter nonsense. NONE of the 19 came to the US through Canada. We let them in - we are culpable. Doing the usual "blame Canada" routine is tiresome and takes the focus off the real changes that WE need to make to our visa regulations.

"The Canadian authorities just let more than a dozen 'Al Queda' go, because they didn't have enough room in ther jails for them."

The original story was that the Canadians were unable to detain any more refugees of Arab extraction because of space issues. You'd swear you were a liberal spinmeister the way you have twisted this to fit your own agenda, for now they have gone from Arab refugees to members of Al Queda. I suppose this is evidence that not all of us here have an above average IQ…

I have to agree with you they must stop the radical element from entering. I am an American and was stupid enough to buy a business here in 96. Canadian Immigration is still harassing me about my business and me operating it. I have placed it up for sale. I am heartbroken. If anyone knows anyone in Canadian Immigration that could help I would appreciate it. If not I will return to my beloved USA never to leave for any reason.

I travel back and forth between the US and Canada every month or so.

During my last visit to Canada, when I stopped at the border, I was asked by the Customs officer my nationality, where I was going, what I was bringing into Canada and how long I intended to stay. My car trunk was searched by two R.C.M.P guys who told me to stay in the car while the search was being conducted.

I was also told that from now, Canada was going to be requiring either a birth certificate or a passport as identification. Driver's licenses were no longer good enough.

When I asked if this also applied to the U.S crossing, I was told 'Probably'.

A few days later, when I drove back to the U.S, the border guard asked me where I lived, and if I was bringing anything back to the U.S. I said that I lived in part of NY state, and that I wasn't bringing anything back.

To which he replied 'Have a nice evening'.

Ashcroft hasn't a clue as to what he's talking about. Nothing's going to change.

The reason Canadians keep voting for Liberals is actually a pretty simple one. In fact, I've even listed this reason for you down below.

Winning back to back majority Conservative governments. $40 million dollars.

Bringing free trade to Canada. $20 million.

Going from 160 seats to 2 because you've managed to annoy everyone in Canada who might have even thought about voting Conservative with the Meech Lake Accord? Priceless.

With all due respect, the curtailing of liberties IS TEMPORARY.

Do you also expect "business as normal" regarding our "Rights" in the event of foreign bombs raining down upon us and the anarchy to follow? A bit dramatic, I know, but the circumstance at present do call for some extreme measures for the time being.

WE ARE SWARMED UPON BY FANATICAL ISLAMIC MOLES WHO'VE SET UP SHOP HERE ALREADY. Perhaps they are know planning the extermination of YOUR town OR mine next.

What do you wanna do -- have OREGON law "enforcement" handle things for ya?

Oh, and here's the other reason.

Oh Stockwell. Those who do not learn the mistakes of history are doomed to repeat them.

"...Have a nice evening."

Our Canadian neighbor is doing THEIR job in contrast to our INS border patrol, who can't be bothered doing their job thoroughly.

"Ashcoft hasn't a clue"(??)

Yeah, why don't we now blame him for the pizza delivery being late while we're at it.
