A feminine woman? Is there such a thing as a feminine woman? I thought that they were all out to dominate, and feminize men! Where do you find them? I always thought that a feminine woman is a mythical creature like the Unicorn, or extinct like the Carrier Pigeon. Please give me more information.

I have to say that, as much as I agree with most of this article, I do get the feeling that Makow likes submissive, docile women.

My honey would scream if I was submissive and docile and just nodded my head like a trained dog whenever he talked to me.

Women have had their role handed to them by society for millennia, maybe millions of years. It is a very recent development that they have a choice, so maybe that is why the choice of a career is being emphasized lately. Believe me, we all know what the options are. I really don't think lack of information on the rewards of family life is the problem. Dictating to women that they should be this or that is the problem.

I agree. Decide whatever works best for you.

There is no bird-brained belief (women and men are the same) that will not give rise to an equal and opposite bird-brained belief (the views in this article.) Must be a law of nature or something-- you know, the universe needs balance.

Arrogant idiots like this tell people who or what to be just like the arrogant idiots of the opposite belief system do-- and I admit, the temptation to do so is enormous, because many people run their own lives extremely badly. But a better prescription for universal happiness is to tell people that they, themselves are responsible to define their own beliefs and choose their own lives in accordance with their own purpose. I, personally, think it's a darn good thing that Condi Rice is where she is. Margaret Thatcher seemed to do an excellent job of defining her life and creating her family. So did both of the George Bushes. People are all different, and there are many different paths to fulfillment.

the "feminine woman" described in the essay is a BIT too "feminine & sissyfied" for my (and most southrons!)taste.

traditionally, the SB was tough, strong, resourceful, intelligent, loving & WHEN NECESSARY a damn fine shot. an awful lot of damnyankees found that out the HARD WAY during the WBTS!

nonetheless, she enjoys being/being treated like a lady and getting dressed up!

long live the SB.

Beyond that, I think there has been a full scale unnannounced going on between men and women which shows no end in site, which the feminists more took advantage of, then they started.

I don't think it's just the feminists. To go back to the women of the 40's and 50's where they stay home and don't have careers, you'd have to put ideas like alimony back into place. As it is today, a woman with no career who finds herself over 40 and kids, isn't going to have alimony. I've seen that with my sister-in-law when her husband left her for another woman, she had been the perfect homemaker, mother and wife but found herself facing minimum wage jobs with no benefits and one child qualifying for child support but yet an older 18 year old too who still need to eat, she was unable to make house payments on 6.00 an hour.

I hope you all don't mind being pinged back here by a stranger. I hope you might humor me by answering a question. This is a test. (grin).

You are with a woman, either your wife or a date. You are at a social gathering, maybe a reception after a speech, or a party, but not a bar. It's a nice place and the people are wandering around from group to group and the conversation is interesting. Suddenly, a man whips out playboy and starts showing the pictures and making the type of comments playboy pictures usually evoke.

What do you do and why? Thanks for playing along!

You may believe that his outlook is not a suitable one to present to female college students, but is it any less suitable than the militant feminist view that is crammed down their throats?

Let's not set up false dichotomies.

I have always subscribed to the idea that men and women are inherently different and that those differences go way beyond biology. (In fact, the older I get, the more certain I am about this.) If that is the case, then perhaps the best way to educate college women is with the idea of "know yourself." Too many nineteen and twenty year-old women are sold a bill of goods with respect to the idea that one can have it all. In truth, a highly successful career and family life are almost impossible for most women to maintain. Women need to be more realistic about the fact that they face certain choices than men, for the most part, don't.

One thing that has puzzled me is why the feminist beliefs of Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinen and others were able to take hold of the minds of an entire generation of women. I have the strong suspicion that their success was enabled by the failure to educate women properly (and, perhaps, the failure to recognize that women need to be educated differently). Where were the intelligent, reasoned responses by educated conservative women to the charges made by the feminists?
