DOVER, N.H. (AP) Two girls will be listed as ''class sweethearts'' in their high school yearbook after a dispute over whether same-sex couples were eligible for the honor.
Nicole Salisbury and Ashley Lagasse, both 17, overwhelmingly led other couples when the yearbook staff conducted its annual ''senior superlatives'' survey two weeks ago.

I can guess what kind of comments this thread will bring, but I'm interested in the fact that 3/4 of the students were apparently OK with this. I doubt that it can be completely chalked up to "indoctrination."

Why would you think the indoctrination techniques would not be effective?

Good for them. It's great they go to a school that supports instead of ridicules them. Judge not lest ye be judged.

Its not like they are supposed to be choosing a couple, they are supposed to be choosing two individuals, one in the male category and the other in the female category.
It seems to me that a lesbian could well win the female category and that the other lesbian could come in second in the female category or they could even tie in the female category. But the idea that one of them can win in the male category is something that a court would have to make new law to accomplish.
The principal just mishandled the situation and made a poorly thought out ruling. He should have stopped half of the problem.

sick school in a sick, sick state. Next up: the "Nambla/Normals" Alliance, in which a child-molesting teacher holds regular meetings to try to normalize the concept of child/adult sex in the minds of impressionable young teens.

Please explain the value of focusing on this subject.

...3/4 of the students were apparently OK with this. I think back to High School, where I would have voted yes to almost anything, sometimes just for a laugh.

These were high school students. Its a big joke. It was just something funny to do. Where to you think the word "sophomore" comes from anyway???

I doubt that it can be completely chalked up to "indoctrination."Back in my day, it seemed to be popular to vote the fat guy as "best looking", the wood shop stoner "most likely to succeed", etc...

You are free to have your opinion over homosexuality--yet you have to realize that "Judge not lest ye be judged" is a very weak argument.
It ranks up there with "Hilter believed/said/wrote (fill in the blank here)."
And some friendly advice... prepared to be flamed.
As for my opinion, the school ballot clearly said to vote one male and one female. The student body disregarded the ballots' instructions. Keeping two females out of "one male, one female" category is not discriminatory IMHO. Superlatives have always been split with one male and one female anyway.

When I was in high school, we voted the biggest freak in class Prom King. For some, it was a joke. For those of us on the outside of the popular clique, it was a great shot at the jocks who thought they were a lock. I suspect there's a similar mix happening here...
