Freeper Suggestions on Where to Retire

I am looking for suggestions from FReepers in lower 48 for city/state recommendations on where to retire.

I have pretty much decided on the western US (excluding the Pacific Coast states) and would lean to the southwestern states. I would stay in Alaska but I am tired of the long winter nights.

Would prefer acreage but you can try to convince me to live in town. :-)

If you know of any on-line newspaper links that have the classified, a URL would be appreciated.

May be true of the beach, but mountain and foothill areas of NC can be quite close to excellent medical facilities in Asheville NC and Spartanburg, SC. Look at SC: it has mountains too, and Hwy 11 thru the foothills shows you some of the prettiest land in America.

Myself and the Mrs. just retired to Happy Valley, Centre County, PA. I'm 4 miles from Penn State campus and can either walk or take a bus to Beaver Stadium. Last evenig we went to see Kenny Rogers (a great Christmas show) and next month Neil Diamond is coming in. Indoor swimming is $80 bucks for the entire winter and my taxes are 1/2 what they were in Bucks county, PA. Hunting and fishing are huge, and three state parks are within 20 minutes from my home. We bought a townhouse at a fairly moderate price (reletive to what we sold our home for) and I'll never mow the gas or rake the leaves again.

For a guy who was brought here kicking and screaming, I'm learning to like it...

I am not looking to move anywhere. We have been in Houston & TX as long as anyone. Its home, not perfect but our family & friends are here. That counts more for me than climate or view or whatever. We will always live here & visit other places that are wonderful (& cool), NM CO WA NC MT WY. We enjoy other parts of TX too, So.TX, San Antonio, Galveston, the Hill Country. We are never bored, like we would be living in the country. We tried the rural life years ago & it came up lacking.

Spain is an extremely beautiful country with a wonderful populace to match. The government doesn't appear to be that intrusive, and they really do like Americans. Spain has a slow-paced lifestyle overall and a low cost of living, is quite civilized and modern for the most part, has a good health care system and low crime rate, and offers everything from sightseeing to outdoor sports and cultural attractions. The country and its people are quite clean, with the inexplicable exception of most public toilets.

The cities are for the most part beautiful and the food is diverse and overall great. And it's only a short flight to the east coast of the USA.

The only drawback is that it's next to France, but the French look down their noses at Spaniards (etc., etc., etc.) and tend to stay away. You can also drive through France and see the rest of Europe with little effort.

Any one else agree or disagree? I'm still gathering informnation....

I second that emotion. Wish I was still in State College instead of Chester County. PSU offers all the cultural and sporting amentities of a big city, without all the high cost of living, crime, traffic and rude people.

Look along the St Johns south of Jacksonville, down toward Georgetown and that whole zone there. Or try Hilliard. Lots of room still left in Paradise.

I enjoyed Spain a few years ago but they don't use unleaded gas & the car exhaust in the cities nearly choked me. Also they never heard of no smoking places. Cough cough!

I have cousins that live there now and it's a great place to live. However, based on past experience with creeping sprawl, I don't think it will be all that great 10 years from now.

The biggest problem I'm having is that I'm becoming a 'professional tailgater' (deep fryed turkey is excellent) and I can't avoid the Creamery...

Yes, but the idiots in charge have tried to pass one in each of the last two years. Only by massive protests was it averted. Look for the threads on the TENN INCOME TAX, TENNCARE, and the MEMPHIS arena/stadium.

Oh man! Last week I ate at an overpriced restaurant in center city Philly. Then I drive through the downtown, averaging 5 MPH, to get to a Sixers game. Paid way too much for seats way too far away. The only taste of State College I get now is going to Damon's in Wilmington...

I wonder how Horowitz will be received. Is he part of the Distinguished Speaker Series?
