Did you happen to see the Major in Spec. Forces interviewed on Fox this afternoon who, when asked what he would do with this "misguided, impressionable" kid, replied; (paraphrase) "I'd check with some American parents who have their kids of the same age fighting for the U.S. in Afgahanastan - I'd ask them if they think this guy neegs to get special consideration as a "kid" after he picked up a gun against his countrymen."

Ballpark that was it - you had to see it to get the force and honesty with which he spoke - best military comentator I have seen on any channel yet!

I haven't spent too many years studying it, but I and most Muslim scholars can tell you that the Taliban's view on Islam is pretty whacked. It's more like local tribal custom heavily influencing which passages of the Qu'ran they lean hard on and which ones they ignore. We've seen this in Christianity too in the more fundamentalist sects.

Take the Taliban's horrid treatment and low placement of women for example. The Qu'ran has many places where women are held in high esteem. One example is Mohammed's youngest wife, Aishah. (searches the Internet for a quick bio to link to...)

Read about her here and see if you think the Taliban would have allowed this woman to exist. She would have been executed in the early days of their rule, yet she was the most beloved wife of their prophet.

I would venture that one U.S. Marine on the ground in Afghanistan has done more to help the poor than the entire alumni of this brilliant idiot's school.

I agree. If a 20 year old marine suddenly defected and joined up with the Taliban, do you think there would be calls to spare him, that's he's just a kid? No way. This guy did not commit treason. When the U.S. became an enemy of the Taliban he didn't fight for the Taliban anymore. He did nothing illegal. Perhaps your reading skills are alot worse than you pretend.
