Actually there is a little thingy you can load that will actually give you an audible ping when someone posts to you. Maybe someone can tell you more about it and tell you how to get it. But the term "ping* came about before that. Maybe some of our computer gurus can give some background on the term ..... I don't think it's unique to FR.
