The Road to the Underground... and Beyond

Want to be a revolutionary? Anarchist? Try this: Walk straight out your door into the night air... Climb a hill or something up high. Look out into the darkness at the dark sky. Then let your eyes look down at the multitude of lights flashing, porch lights, street lights, offices, cars and airports. Close your eyes and you can still see it... Ripeness for picking.

Picture the thousands of cities, millions of cars... the rows of shiny jet airplanes, ready and fueled. Safety and security purchased cheap, on the market, hired guards with guns. How many bullets or light bulbs does it take to run a global consumer system, how many burn out each day? Bulbs are dying and guns are selling faster than young bodies are rotting (45,000 dead each day, 17 million a year to starvation and war). Hunger and starvation become investments in the game of Globalization.net. How much do I get for 44,000 extinct species each year? Can you feel inside of yourself the things you can’t express... the hidden pain? The broken filmstrip plastic slaps noisily as the techno-police state-nightmare keeps pounding its counter-mantra: “Pull the plug. Stop me! Before I hurt everything, more...” If we took a bunch of starving kids and endangered animals, and we just burned them in a big bonfire, would it make you flinch? Or will we soon just stand there as the bar-code programming replaces our eyes—or at least our vision. This dark monster that shines before our eyes is like The Matrix—only worse—it’s organic and it ends in the death of everything. It’s more than a game and more than a movie when this curtain closes.

Scrap the way you have viewed the world. All the key symbols and cultural concepts we use to define the world—the way that we think—have been corrupted and manipulated to delude us into ignorance and self-destruction. If the system hasn’t stolen your soul yet, nor sucked out your determination, then come along with us. Embrace the Underground.

We don’t need to hide behind words like democracy, reform or progress. Purge these constructs and replace them with liberation, anarchy and love from our hearts. We must be brave and believe in a world of sharing free expression and love for all things. It will be a long road through the Underground.

Moderates always play the game of holding back and diluting the radicals’ “condemnation of materialism.” From Jesus to Buddha and Gandhi to Che Guevara, moderates beg for patience and then redefine the truth.

These are the “end times” of mass movement protests and even riots may no longer be effective. These are the “end times” of passivism, patience and moderation. The Underground’s bonfires of celebration will burn through the veil of the media’s smokescreen. Praxis not posturing.

**************Bring the war home. We chart a new course for a life worth living. ***************There will be no more USA, corporations, technology or material affluence. There will be mutual aid, cooperation, decentralization, self-sufficiency and the liberation of desires—self expression—true anarchy and wildness. This is not just a revolution about power! Culture, spirituality, thinking and technology must all change radically. We believe that our way—the quickening way— results in much less suffering. We reach now to pull the plug on energy systems and all the toys of the greedy boys. All those shiny airplanes will become roofing shingles... and the skyscrapers will be greenhouses. We’ve got a lot of reducing, reusing and recycling to do, a lot to learn and to unlearn. Break the rules, trespass fate. Tune in to your deepest feelings, the wind on a rooftop during a reckless night of adventure, the roar of an unexpected kiss, the magic of your favorite songs lifting you up. Fearless against the darkness that the government plans for us, we are strong in our own desires. We come with stones and slingshots, the strange and untamed weapons of our imagination. For a world of wonder where anything is possible...

Often, "movements" like "Earth First" and "Al Qaeda" are portrayed by their founders as grass roots movements- resulting from the inexorable forces of history, politics, culture, and/or divine destiny. This is nothing but a delusion of the founders of such movements. They are often really expressions of the vanity and egos of their founder's; there would be no "Al Qaeda" if it were not for it's meglomanical Osama Bin Laden. "Earth First" doubtless has similar self aggrandizing personalities behind its existence and continued notoriety. So, the lengths that these individuals will go to make their names known, for the sake of their self centered view of the world, will determine just how far the insane agenda promoted by these people will go. When and if it's self possessed leaders decide that their particular "Rubicon" has been crossed, we can expect at least some sort of attempt at deadly terrorism; bombings, sabotage, perhaps even assassinations. The insanity of the leaders is the real threat, not any perceived strength or influence of the group itself.

My point is that far from these being historical movements, having sociological or true political basis and motivation, they are more the creation and reflections of the personalities of individuals, and that is their weakness. Since there is no real working ideology behind a "movement" other than a lot of "Gaia" oriented drivel, and a Luddite ignorance and hatred for anything having to do with technology or modern civilization, "Earth First" is heavily dependent on the whims, twisted vision, and dubious leadership of a very few individuals. They flatter themselves with grand sounding pronouncements, prattling on and on with their high minded manifestos. But like Ted Kaczynski, despite flashes of insight and even brilliant observations about the human condition, they basically have no idea what they are talking about.

This "Earth First" is no real potential mass movement; it is a prescription for societal suicide, as anyone with common sense can easily see. Only if a new dark age descends, and despotic warlord types govern the landscape amidst a post nuclear wasteland, could anything akin to the idiocy that these people propose ever come about. Then they will not have to worry about the corruption of technological civilization, as their insane practices will bring about and perpetuate such pervasive, devastating famine and decline, that simple survival will be an almost impossible achievement. What we have to fear from these people, would be the effect of the the rest of us sinking to their level of profound ignorance and self hatred. I don't think things have declined that far, just yet.

Ford Foundation gives Audubon $5 million and Earthwatch $5 million. Toyota gives Audubon $500,000. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) runs on an annual budget of about $400 million (including $37 million of your tax dollars thanks to generous feds). According to Tom Knudson of the Sacramento Bee, federal support of environmental groups is substantial and growing. “Last year,” he writes, “about $137 million flowed to 20 major environmental nonprofit groups – an average of $377,000 a day.”

This is part of an editorial from RANGE magazine's Winter issue.

In the mean time, ranchers have livestock killed, buildings torched and are harassed by these nuts. I suspect from your rather "we should be above it all" tone, you have never had any direct dealings with these idiots.

I wish I knew the answer to that. If we can't cut these idiots off with a Republican president in office, I'm not sure how it will ever be done.

What you don't agree with them? I wish we could go back to the days before industrialization. You know, when child mortality was about 25%. When stavation was a reality every winter. When infectious diseases took 1 or 2 members of the family each year. When "getting by" meant back breaking labor from sun up to sun down. Why can't everyone see how wonderful bringing all that back would be?

Not only does that headline Art Bells News site at (artbell.com). the section is called "Quickening News". Much of the news there concentrates on enviro news, many of Arts guests are envirowhackos although none are as seditious as the Earth First crowd. The United Nations also shares this view of Capatilist-Techno-Defense countries such as our Great United States of America, the U.N. is at every turn our most rabid enemy evidence (Kyoto Treaty).

Also not a new idea, Tony Snow (Fox News) wrote a column on that subject five or six years ago.

Actually, I know some locals who at least think they are on the same page as these lunatics. And if I came off as "we should be above it all" ... then I didn't get my point across. They are a real danger that must be dealt with seriously, but not because of their ideas. They are more like outlaws than a real ideologically based movement, with all the romantic delusions that go with it. In Phoenix we had a guy by the name of Sand, who committed numerous acts of arson, mainly burning almost completed luxury homes that he determined were encroaching on the natural environment of the desert. They caught him, despite a Jesse James / Robin hood like reputation that he cultivated, and having the local anti-establishment press cheer him on. They have thrown the book at him. He got 10 years and I say GREAT, and that justice has been done. HE was the problem... I don't expect any of his compatriots to have the balls to follow in his foot steps... but we will see.
