New Orleans FReepers: Any place I must go?
12-01-01 | Aeronaut

I will be coming to Big Easy on the 10th for a convention. Is there some place (or places) that I should make a point of seeing while there? Special places to eat? Imbibe? Any guidance will be appreciated.

I'll be around for three and a half days. I suppose I will have to attend some of the convention events... :-}

If you're in the Quarter, my favorite place is Mr. B's for dinner..

Cafe Du Monde, order beignets and cafe au lait

Spend time at Preservation Hall Jazz, also.

I'm not from New Orleans, but have been there a hundred times it seems. Can't get enough of it. Eat at Commander's Palace in the Garden District. About a ten minute cab ride from French Quarter.

Don’t walk around at night alone!

Are the watering holes safe?

Yes, the bars and restaurants are safe, but criminals and gang members prowl the streets at night, especially in the French Quarter, looking for lone tourists to rob.

In no particular order:

If you are up at 3am and near Uptown, try 'F&Ms'. It's a great ol' place to drink into the wee hours. (4841 Tchoupitoulas St)

Around the corner from there is the world famous 'Tipitina's'. If there is any music playing there that is half-way decent, do go. [501 Napoleon, (504) 891-8477]

For a great lunch treat get a Po' Boy, try 'the Ferdie', at 'Mother's'. (401 Poydras)

Another good place to have lunch, or not-so-expensive dinner is 'Snug Harbor'. (626 Frenchman). It's on the other side of the French Quarter on this really cool street in the avante garde part of town called Fabourg Marigny.

Of the nice restaurants -- aside from 'Emeril's' and 'Commanders Palace', which are great but touristy -- I'd recommend 'Bayona'. (430 Dauphine Street - (504)525-4455). It's in the French Quarter and it's really romantic and yummy.

Also, check out stuff on Magazine Street. There are antique stores galore and beyond Louisiana (between Garden District and Uptown) there are some nice restaurants and bars.

It's been 20 yrs. since I lived there, but Ralph and Kacoo's for seafood (in the Quarter) and the Camelia Grill on S. Carrollton come to mind. (You can find both on google.com) I'd also recommend fasting for a week before you arrive!

About Camelia Grill -- you can take the street car which will give you a nice trip through the Garden District, past Tulane and Loyola Univs. and some really grand houses.

There is a sandwitch called a muffuletta that is served on a round bun. It is layers of "cold cuts", cheeses, and a chopped olive salad. Central Grocery in the Quarter is reputed to make the best one, but our favorite one is served at The Napoleon House. If you are a seafood fan. try a shrimp, oyster, or combination shrimp-oyster poor boy. A poor boy sandwitch is similar to a "subway" type sandwitch in appearance, but it is made on french bread that has a chrispy crust. Any type is great, but a great roast beef poor boy beats a Philly cheese steak any day.

Drove over to N'Awlins for my b'day. I agree on the Central Grocery for a great muffelatta but belly up to the oyster bar at Felix's in the quarter. Try some Abita beer. The brewery is across the lake in Abita Springs. I'm partial to the Turbodog.

And if you try boiled crawfish, be sure and suck the heads so you won't look like a tourist. :)

Sounds like you've got a number of good restaurants on the list. You might want to take in the D-Day Museum, while you're in town. It's in the Central Business District - most of the hotels have the brochure. Allow several hours, minimum. That ought to either help work up your appetite - or walk off a meal! :-)
