Thanks for becoming one of the 5,000! I agree with you that you can learn more here on Free Republic than at any university!

Bitching, moaning and nitpicking are okay as long as those doing that make sure that Free Republic, which, they are bitching, moaning and nitpicking stays alive. Thanks for caring!

You posted, "Bump to keep the FR Christmas lights on."

Right on! Let's keep the FR Christmas lights on, and let Jim relax on this Christmas with 5000 monthly donors!

Thanks Grampa for this thread - signed up for a monthly rather than my usual sporatic donation. Hope this helps JimRob and many thanks to you and John for ALL you do for FR and us.

#21 Perhaps you remember when people would hold out two dimes and one nickel and ask, "do you have a solid quarter?"?

I remember that. Like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe. So, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. 'Give me five bees for a quarter', you'd say. Now, where were we? Oh, yeah...the important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war; the only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.

That symbol would let us know that Freeper was a regular giver of at least $5/month!

That's a great idea, however, I am concerned that some will see it as an elitist symbol, a "get out of jail free" card for flaming and otherwise acting rudely. Both the "haves" and "have nots" may interpret or use the symbol incorrectly. I am not sure how to correct this possible problem.

To bring even more problems to the table, some have opined that donors are treated with kid gloves by the moderators, which is untrue, but a symbol would only further validate those faulted assertions.

Actually, I wasn't trying to post a recurring monthly charge to my credit card, but rather, I was trying to make a lump sum contribution.

Need to have lowbridge, registered or doughertyone to do up a graphic of FRee Republic in Christmas Lights.

A Norman Rockwell-esk Christmas portrait of JimRob at his computer might be nice too. :)

So please, if you aren't set up for a monthly contribution, please do so now. Even if it is just $5. It's not the amount that matters so long as everybody does their little part. Then you can ignore all these fund-raiser threads with a clean conscience. And when the day comes that Free Republic rivals the major media in influence, you can proudly say that you helped to build it.

Worth repeating!!!!

I forget when I started do the monthly, I know I made a contribution to winter quarter fundraiser - so I guess it must have been the March one that I started. it's not much $12 a month - but I felt it worth it. That's less than the cost of a case of beer!!!!

When I lost my source of income in July, my husband said that I could continue the contribution. When his position at work got changed and further cut or income, he told me I could continue my contribution. He's a lurker, but doesn't spend much time here (I keep him in formed!!!) but feels that I get so much out of it, and have met so many wonderful folks, that he will not deny me, cause it makes me feel better!!!!

I'm not looking for sympathy - Like you I'm just trying to make the case, that GrampaDave's $5 a month is not asking a whole lot!!!!

Well I already gave pretty much a yearly pledge last night, the lying disruptors causing amuck in the post convinced myself that I should donate more to FR than I had before. But that yearly pledge could just be a gift in my sense, I'll gladly give $15/month. For all the news and great times I have on this site, it is well worth it. And it would be unfair for Jim Rob and John Rob to pay all that money themselves, when we are addicted to FR and use it constantly.

John, if we can get 5,000 regular monthly donors (regardless of their amount*), it seems to me that a simple recognition of their monthly care should be possible!

Having done a lot of work with non profits and with my church for decades, I have evolved to responding to the emotional charges you mention with a simple, "So!" Then in some cases with some really rude individuals, I have started using your dad's comments, "Stuff a sock in it or move on!" At age 63, I never worry about losing those who never contribute and just try to run down an organization! In most cases the organization is better without them!

Of course the decision is Jim's and yours! I recognize that fact and so do most of your loyal supporters! It just seems that could be some way to identify those Freepers who really care on a regular basis without being intrusive and other PC words!

*The reason why I selected a $5/month regular donation was based on Jim's cost data of your upcoming expenses! We don't have to know the amount per month, but it would be nice to know who is paying for their lunch and the lunch for the other 90%!

Thanks for your comments, and we realize that Jim and your decision on this little issue is yours!

You are now looking at a monthly contributer! Feels good, too. So I'll have one less drink a month. Not a bad deal. The least I can say about this site is that I have made some good cyber-friends in all of you. Take care.
