I'm happy you see that earlier immagrants had to have a much greater commitment to becomming American by virtue of knowing where was no going back. There has always been a fairly good number of immigrants who decide that the U.S. isn't for them, and head back to the "old country." Ellis Island has an exhibit at their museum about this phenomenon.
