Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan has warned Washington his country would repulse a US attack and hinted that, in the event of such a strike, Iraq could fire missiles at Israel.

"Any unjust aggression to be carried out by the American administration will bring evil consequences on America," Ramadan said in an interview in Baghdad with the Qatari satellite channel Al-Jazeera yesterday.

He was responding to Monday's comments by US President George W Bush who warned Iraq of consequences if it produced weapons of mass destruction. Bush said Iraqi President Saddam Hussein should allow UN arms inspectors to return "to prove to the world he's not developing weapons of mass destruction."

Asked what would happen if Saddam refused, Bush replied: "He'll find out."

Conservatives within the Bush administration have reportedly been urging the president to extend the anti-terroism campaign to Iraq after the war in Afghanistan has finished.

Ramadan said Iraq expected a US attack but would not regard it as anything new. "The aggression is going on, the blockade is comprehensive and devastating," he said, referring to the UN sanctions imposed since Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990.

The embargo has had a crippling effect on the Iraqi economy and caused shortages for the population.
