If the place exploded with home decorating tips or a floating bridge game or pet grooming advice or get-rich-quick schemes, I'd expect someone to jump on it pronto.

How about tattooed Barbies, padded codpieces, and nosy in-laws? Oh, and turtles that breathe through the excretory end of their alimentary canal.

I wouldn't consider religious threads in the same league of irrelevance or triviality. Since our religion is the prime shaper of our culture, it is an integral part of our society and our government. Granted, most religious threads end up as a sort of biblical dodge-ball, with one side throwing a scripture that battens their position and another countering with quotes that -- at least in their opinion -- completely disprove the opposition defense. I don't feel that purely theological subjects are particularly valid here, but certainly the moral derivatives of religion bear on our social structure.

Oh, absolutely. And religion has a real impact on things that are on topic. Heck, I wouldn't be too rigorous about the really, really off-topic stuff either - a little fun and letting off steam is good all around.

If I remember right, the original injunction was against "preaching", as opposed to a blanket rejection of any religious discussion. Lately, there just seems to be an explosion of posts of a creepy, foot-washing-and-snake-handling, you'll-be-sorry-when-you-fry-in-hell type. The innumerable Harry Potter threads are an example (can you tell this one is stuck in my craw?).

Free Republic is going to be as good or as bad as people make it. Good or bad is subjective. It's all about perspectives. There has always been discussion about what are thought to be 'legitimate' topics, and why people should refrain from dumbing down the discussions by including things like "Madonna's Raspberries" or "Caption Hitlery's Pic" or "What's Your Favorite R-rated Movie?".

The thing is, all of those topics are relevant if people think they are, and if they (as 'conservatives') have a need to discuss them, or even if they just want to have fun with a subject sometimes. There is no place else on the internet where you could find such a diverse group of people who will consider your POV, listen attentively, flame your ass off, and keep coming back.
