I don't think we know the entire true story about how the scene was set, and where all the players were and what they were doing... Some stories indicate a Brit journalist wandering around started the kickoff to a firefight..... It's still not clear that the CIA fellow was performing recklessly. If you have seen a report that confirms his recklessness - I'd be interested in seeing it. I've heard some reports that "Mike" was a former Marine officer...giving strong indication he wasn't a fool.
However - I will agree with your comment as to the hazzard of having the field spooks anywhere near your your position in indian country".. A gunny once threaten to shoot an "advisor" if he ever approached the wire again.
