This is really scary stuff, and it gets scarier. I called PSD here and > asked them what a retiree would need to replace a lost I.D. card and asked > specifically if a certified court-copy of a DD 214 would suffice. I was > informed that they usually ask to see a picture i.d. but would probably > issue the i.d. card without it, so long as the member had a certified copy > of his DD 214! Bob called Dennis Xxxxxx, the Retired > Activities Program Director at BUPERs and gave him a heads-up on the > situation. Sandra is notifying her superiors at the VA. Debbie has > brought the matter to the attention of the TAMP Program Manager in PERS.

Please help warn folks. Unfortunately, the down side to not filing the DD > 214 with the county court is the hassle it can take to replace a lost DD > 214. It can take months to get one replaced, if at all. The bottom > line is safeguarding this important document. Have folks make copies and keep > the original in a SAFE place (kid/animal/fire proof, > etc...). >

I believe that we are both right here! Was this lawyer a public defender or one on the payrolls? He accessed the county records via the county computer. That leaves me to think that he was a county employee. Also, since he is a lawyer, the odds really jump that he is a registered demonicRat!

As you point out, if filed with a county clerk, anyone can go there to get the info. However, if someone filed for thousands of DD214s via the standard channels, some alarm bells might be raised!

"Accessing via the County computer" may include just hitting the county's Web server from his own computer...a few counties in America have managed to scan all of their public records into Adobe Acrobat and hook them up to a database server.

ID theft wasn't as prevalent years ago and this advice was routinely given during out-processing. Few vets that did this realized that their DD 214 would become public record. Your advice to NOT do this is exactly right, however.

This is the key to the entire thing I think. Most of what is filed at the court house regarding our lives is available for others to see including: Real Estate Transactions, Drivers License, Department of Motor vehicles info, Court proceedings, etc. So in effect we are all an open book to those that want to take the time to find out info... In fact there are some online services now such as PublicData.com.

Too late for me. Filed mine at the county court house 32 years ago. Maybe it's buried under so much dust by now that no one will ever find it. Filing seemed like a good idea back then; I actually knew a guy who was drafted during the Korean war because he had lost proof that he'd served in WWII, and the DOD was not in the mood to look it up for him.

"Uh....whuh? What's a DD 214?"

It's what comes after DD 213.

"Would that be in National City?"

I think you would mean "Nasty City", right next to Chula Juana.

I guess it depends on where you live. Here in Oklahoma, the County Clerk told me that if I need a replacement copy, phone them, and they will send it to my home address. If I go there, they will STILL send it to my home address. NOW I just need to figure some way to keep this address when I move...

Wow. I've been reading through all the posts and am glad I never filed mine. Guess being lazy is good occasionally — like when I didn't get my DNA and HIV tests and anthrax shots right before my discharge. ;)

Didn't they call that place "Little Olongapo"? I've been in there a couple of times.
