You're right, like all good questions it's divisive - it's sure to make clear the moral absolutists and the moral relativists, for one.
You're also right that it merits an answer (though you probably forgot a "not" in a rush to get away from it).
Again, at what point do we, as a body of individuals, say 'we cannot ethically allow one person to do this to another'? That's neither vague nor stupid - it's a question of the government's rightful role in our lives, so don't try to condescendingly side-step the question.
If you don't have an answer or have never even considered it, then just admit it.
