Sons of Confederate Veterans fight to get book in library

SUMMERVILLE (AP) (--) The Dorchester County Library Board is on the front lines of a fight to put a book refuting current history written about the Civil War on its shelves.

"The South Was Right!," written by Sons of Confederate Veterans members and brothers James Ronald Kennedy and Walter Donald Kennedy of Louisiana, states the Confederacy had the right to be a free nation and most of what is taught in this country is false and misleading.

A crowd of about 50 people, mostly members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in St. George and Moncks Corner, pleaded for the board to approve the book Tuesday night.

Library director Mickey Prim is reviewing the book and is expected to make a recommendation to the board in about two or three weeks.

St. George resident Laren Clark said she tried six months ago to donate the book the county library but was told the title was too inflammatory.

"There is no reason for this book to not be in the library," said St. George resident Charles Moorer.

But board chairman Jim Neil asked the group if upon approval, there would be any objection to it being placed at the Summerville branch instead of the main library in St. George because of a space shortage.

Several audience members offered to supply shelves.

Awww, I like you #3Fan. How 'bout those Fightin' Illini? Ranked number 8 and Rose Bowl bound...except there's no Rose Bowl. I curse the day that the people in Pasadena agreed to get sucked into the BCS bullsh*t. It should be Illinois vs. Oregon in Pasadena on New Years Day, not Illinois vs. Texas or some other loser team.

I'll take Lincoln at his word.

Don't do that! How many lawyer/politician friends do you trust? All the ones I know are crooked. I used to work for one!

Let's just agree to disagree on this one :^)

But why not? I deliberately tried to pick quotes from Lincoln to friends and family. People who would know him best. Why would he fake piety to people who whould know it was fake? The truth of the matter is that the deist Lincoln of the early days changed into a more devout and spiritual man later in life and the factor that led to this change was the death of his two sons.

"When the sovereign state of Virginia ratified the U.S. Constitution in June 1788, it did so with this proviso: “that the powers granted under the Constitution, being derived from the people of the United States, may be resumed by them, whenever the same shall be perverted to their injury and oppression.” That is, the people of the states could withdraw their consent and “resume,” or reclaim, the powers delegated to the U.S. Government."
Sobran, 12/2000

Hmmm...looks like a discrepancy in the historical record.

Looks to me like the Sovereign States were involved in the ratification of the constitution. In fact State bodies ratified as representatives for the people of their states.

========================

In Convention Monday September 17th 1787.

Present The States of

New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Mr. Hamilton from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

Resolved, That the proceeding Constitution be laid before the United States in Congress assembled, and that it is the Opinion of this Convention, that it should afterwards be submitted to a Convention of Delegates, chosen in each State by the People thereof, under the Recommendation of its Legislature, for their Assent and Ratification; and that each Convention assenting to, and ratifying the Same, should give Notice thereof to the United States in Congress assembled.

Resolved, That it is the Opinion of this Convention, that as soon as the Conventions of nine States shall have ratified this Constitution, the United States in Congress assembled should fix a Day on which Electors should be appointed by the States which shall have ratified the same, and a Day on which the Electors should assemble to vote for the President, and the Time and Place for commencing Proceedings under this Constitution. That after such Publication the Electors should be appointed, and the Senators and Representatives elected: That the Electors should meet on the Day fixed for the Election of the President, and should transmit their Votes certified, signed, sealed and directed, as the Constitution requires, to the Secretary of the United States in Congress assembled, that the Senators and Representatives should convene at the Time and Place assigned; that the Senators should appoint a President of the Senate, for the sole Purpose of receiving, opening and counting the Votes for President; and, that after he shall be chosen, the Congress, together with the President, should, without Delay, proceed to execute this Constitution.

By the Unanimous Order of the Convention

Go Washington Presidt

W. Jackson Secretary.

I thought it was you that asserted that sovereign people, with the exclusion of the states ratified the constitution. Perhaps it was JSUATI or Whiskey papa.

States were created contemporaneously with the Nation and did not have true sovereignty ever. - JSUHATI

The sovereign states predated the nation. Heck, the US Constitution was based largely on the Virginia constitution. (which predated it)

All of that, and the rest of of their hate-filled rant is easily refuted by referring to the record. You think they'd get tired of being made to look so foolish.

They know that Free Republic is populated with people from the entire United States and yet get annoyed when someone from a different area of the country than the South debates them when they say the rest of the country is tyrannical. Well what do they expect. This site is called Free Republic. The name means the whole of America. They post on a site named Free Republic and try to say America is a tyrannical Republic. There's going to be friction.

At the time the nation was forming Virginia was a colony of the King of England. The American Nation was formed while the States were changing from colonies. Thus, they were formed contemporaneously.

"We the People of the United States....do obtain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

This says all that is necessary about who established the constitution.

Awww, I like you #3Fan.

Same to you, sir. In this day and age anyone who has a grip on reality, and is willing learn and know truth, and speak for principles, such as yourself must be appreciated.

I'm glad their doing good because a lot of my friends are big fans but to tell you the truth I don't pay much attention to college football. Now of course I'll watch them. I've been a big time Bears fan since '81 though. The Bears and the Illini, playing in the same stadium down two hours closer to here next year...woo hoo!

Hmmm...looks like a discrepancy in the historical record.

Article IV, Section 1 says Congress can make general laws regarding how the acts of states are proved or their effect.

The United States was formed in 1776 not 1787 so Virginia's constitution did not predate the United States as a nation merely the Constitution. Many of the States established their first constitutions as states during 1776.

What makes you think I would not allow the devoted readers of books full of lyin' crap to get their fixes of fallacious foolishness? I explicitly said earlier that I would not remove this book from the library.

Please get it straight when you launch an attack otherwise you look more foolish than usual.

Libraries owned by one government or the other? Lol a new level of dimwittery has been reached.

Let us assume, for a moment, that you and that well-known Constitutional wizard Mr. Sobran are correct and that somehow, despite the fact that the Constitution clearly states that it is the supreme law of the land, the Virginia ratification document overrides the Constitution. So what? That explains Virginia. What about Georgia and South Carolina and the other states that did not put such a proviso in their ratification documents? What about Alabama and Mississippi and Florida and other states which never ratified the Constitution at all but instead agreed to abide by the Constitution as price of statehood? What's their excuse for their illegal actions?

Without the help of God the 600,000 men armed to the teeth could easily have been beaten. How many times did the Israelites defeat overwhelming odds because God was on their side?

There is nothing wrong with dissenting opinions but those opinions must be based on something more substantive than discredited arguments, outright lies and misinterpreted facts.

Perhaps the greatest benefit to come from the Civil war was the destruction of the power of the Democratic party for almost 50 years. Unfortunately, it is back to wreck havoc upon the nation once again.
