Most consevatives hate the New York Times, often with good reason. Personally, I only read it for a few sections and editorial writers. However, I think the NY Times should be applauded for something they have been doing since Sept.11.
Turn to the last page of the Nation Challenged section. The portraits of grief page. This page should be required reading for everyone in America.
I fear that the shear number of dead has numbed America. 5,000 people dead is such a faceless and cold number. To better understand the magnitude of this disaster, you should read Portraits of Grief.
I try to read at least one of the entries a day. I puts me down, makes me depressed, but I feel it's important. Here's a excerpt:
Lawrence Veling
"It can be surprising what latent talents fathers discover when they want to make their kids happy.
Last Christmas, Lawrence Veling found he had a knack for drawing characters from the Nickleodeon show "Blue's Clues." He had never sketched or doodled, and couldn't draw anything else.
But for his 2 year old son Kevin, he could churn out remarkable likenesses of Blue, Mr.Salt, Mrs. Pepper, Slippery Soap and Tickety Tock in rapid succession as Kevin cried "More!" Even the neighbors were impressed when they saw Mr.Veling's chalk drawings on the sidewalk."
It breaks my heart to read these things. But I feel it's almost a duty for me to read this. I don't want to forget, I don't want this tragedy to be forgotten. These little stories in the paper will last for over a year, and I want to try to read them everyday. I hope many others take a little time to read about all those Americans who were killed on September 11th.
Good job NYT.
